what does 'what agwan' mean in Jamaican language?

by Sistren
(chula vista california, 91913)

QUESTION:

What does 'what a gwaan' mean?

ANSWER: by Wellesley November 8, 2010

What a gwaan simply means -in queen's English, 'How are You?'.

It may also be interpreted to mean, 'What is happening?' so it depends a lot on the context.

There might be other slight variants, but those are the core meanings.

I hope that helps.

How do i handle my Jamaican father of my child

I was involved with a Jamaican man for over 5 years, he fathered all 4 of my children only 1 survived. I had no idea he was married, he's a convincing liar. The wife and I had a long conversation, where she told me he cheated on her constantly, family member found pictures of him involved in threesomes, girls picking him up from relatives homes, and much more.

He denied paternity of our child to her, but I forwarded her pictures, emails and voicemail. She knows the truth. He would call to chat with our child before the truth came out. This has since changed, he did call and text a threat to me, if I return to Jamaica, a place I've loved for years, prior to meeting him. I'm now told he runs in dangerous circles.

I've removed him from the birth certificate. He never supported her anyway, other than buying an outfit or two when we were there. How do I handle his threats and returning to Jamaica in April.

Getting married this December - need suggestions

by Kitten
(Jamaica)

QUESTION: I'm getting married in December and need to find me someone that can do my eyelash extension to make them have that sexy movie star look. Don't like to false looking ones or those that look very clumpy. Thanks for your comments.

ANSWER: by Wellesley November 27, 2011

Hi there Kitten!

Where in Jamaica are you? Or will you be?
I'm asking because I am tempted to recommend you to the Wedding Planner Plus. They are the folks that coordinated my wedding last June - and they did an awesome job!

You might want to check them out. They might not do the make-up stuff themselves, but I think they have contractors that can come in for that.

Worst case, they might be able to recommend you to someone.

I'll also post this question & answer on our blog and facebook page for additional comments and suggestions. Congrats again and good luck!

I'm 17, can i still rent a hotel room with my 17 year old friend?

by Andrew
(Canada)

QUESTION:

I'm planning a trip to Jamaica but me and my friend ae both 17 years old, can we still rent hotel rooms?

ANSWER: by Wellesley August 04, 2011

Hi Andrew,

Sorry to dissapoint you pal but it the answer is actually no. At age 17 you are still considered a minor and as such hotels should not be checking you in without an adult.

Having said that, their could well be hotels that would take the risk and accommodate you but that is unlawful.

I hope that helps.

Did you see the page about all inclusive resorts in Jamaica?

There are actually quite a few here though; two that comes quickly to mind would be Beaches Resorts, FDR Resort and the Starfish

.

Breezes Negril would probably be great option! Negril has lovely beaches and there is always something for the children to do.

Flowers in Jamaica - where to buy local Jamaican flowers

by francesca danu

With many people coming to Jamaica for family weddings and JAMAICA being famous for it's national flowers. It would be wonderful to be able to find local growers or flower markets where one could buy flowers so people could create their own flowers for family weddings and support small businesses and growers.

Any ideas welcome.

How long of a trip would it be to go between Negril and St. Thomas?

by Kathy Egan
(Phoenix, AZ, USA)

QUESTION:

Hi - We will be visiting Jamaica for the first time and staying in Negril. I've heard the roads can be challenging. How long of a trip would it be to go between Negril and St. Thomas?

Can we easily use a bus or should we hire a car & driver?

ANSWER: November 22, 2010 by Wellesley

Hey Kathy,

Good question. The distance is not too long by say American standards, but it is literally the longest straight distance on the island; Negril is in the extreme west and St. Thomas, the extreme east!

And you are right, although some major work development has been done, the road is still far from ideal. Especially in the rural areas.

I would think it should take close to, if not over 4 hours, depending on traffic (time of day) and how deep in St. Thomas you are going.

For those distances and such occasions, I would strong suggest you get a designated driver who is reliable, patient and dependable. This again is especially so since his is your first trip to Jamaica.

That said, do enjoy yourself here. Eat lots of jerk and have lots of adventure.

And please, do take lots of photos! I will be looking for you to share some of your Jamaican memories here.

"Jammm...I say me lookin at the people cause they havin good times,
Me lookin at the girlies cause they lookin real fine

3rd line...unsure

So come have good times with e-dog and ???"....

The accent is very thick, and i cannot translate the dialect in some parts. We really need help on this, and have had no luck on any of the jamaican chats ..hopefully some one can. thanks in advance...

married in Jamaica questions - met the love of my life!

(New York, USA)

I am from the U.S. and while down on vacation in Ochie, I met the love of my life! We would very much like to get married when I go back on vacation this coming July and I have a few questions.

Will we be able to obtain a marriage license when I am down there or will we have to apply beforehand?

If we have to apply before, what is the time frame?

Will I have to mail all of my official documents or can I just bring them when I come? I am only going to be down there for 8 days so I want to make sure that all of my ducks are in a row and that this will be possible to do.

Also, will we have to travel to Kingston to get the marriage license or is there a place that issues them in Ochie?

I will be mostly in the region of Falmouth, Trewlawny.

I think I had read on one web site that a paring system operate for traveller. I can't find it anymore. I will go around on and in the island.

ANSWER: October 21, 2010 by Wellesley

Hi Martin,

I think you are speaking of the Meet the People program.

Yes, the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) had something like that. I am not sure the status of it now though. I would suggest you google that term or, better yet, contact the tourist board directly and ask them.

The JTB's website is http://visitjamaica.com. If you prefer to talk, you should find their phone number there as well.

I also think they are following us (@myislandjamaica on twitter so they may well be seeing your question from my twitter post in real time, and hopefully, will respond.

ANSWER: by Wellesley February 05, 2012

Good memories!
Thanks so much for your question Wayna.

First, thanks a lot for the kind words.

I am happy my website was able to bring back such lovely memories for you too. Trust me, it always feels nice to hear how this website is helping, benefiting - or in your case, bringing back memories Wayna.

Its feels even warmer to know that you are a manning's student like myself.
--The beacon of Westmoreland, Jamaica :-)

Anyway, I've done some quick research and found some information that you might find useful.

It's only on the first three though, I think you might need to provide more details in regards to the last two.

The author for RESPONSE is Cecil Gray
The author for NEW SHIPS is Donald G. Wilson &
The author for SPRAT MORRISON is Jean D'Costa

I will dig a bit more to see what I can find on the others but please add comments or email me if you have further information to aid in the research.

In the meantime, please stay close to this page, I suspect that some of my website fans will be commenting; you might just find some of that information useful.

By the way, I am from the Common Entrance Exam era too! Those were the days, huh? :-)

Hi Monica,
According to the marriage unit at the Registrar General's Department in Kingston, you can - yes.

They suggested that you may be able to use your passport. I hope that helps.

drinking in jamaica for seventeen year old

by reinnette
(virginia, USA)

hi i will be staying in the rose hall ritz carlton soon and have been trying to figure out if i will be allowed to drink there?

i have looked at several websites and some say i will be allowed to drink because i look over the age of fifteen, but others say that resorts are very strict about giving alcohol to underage vacationers. most people think i am between the ages of eighteen and twenty-six so will i have a problem ordering a drink?

will the resort really give us wristbands so the waitstaff will know if i am old enough or not?
