For the last five or so, the New Year's had caught us (Tasha and I) in church, or at least in some sort of reflective atmosphere, but this time we decided to make a change.
We opted for some frolic.
We went to Negril, to Alfred's Ocean Palace to see the much touted fireworks.
We finally managed to eek out a parking, but by then the fireworks had just about started. We didn't miss much though as it lasted for over an hour.
We saw some crazy fireworks. Unfortunately my camera battery went dead and I never had the camera bag with the spare, but I caught enough- I think, to give you an idea.
It was awesome! Here you go. (Of course we stayed back for the after party)
Every year is exciting, but this year was going to be extra special for two reasons.
One, we welcomed back a family member we never even knew was still alive.
And two, Brent, Uncle Toney's son, was recognized for his outstanding academic work.
Brent had won numerous awards for academic excellence in the US, including Top Caribbean Student!
He will be the first Medical Doctor in the family.
My late Great Grandma, Mammy, for whom we started and dedicated this yearly event, had a 'lost' brother who none of us knew, except Aunt Estell and Dada (Sadie) -My grandaunt and grandmother respectively, who as small children, vaguely remembered him.
It was great. Melvin (the prodigal) brought his own family- wife, kids, grand kids etc and we all mingled.
Of course, this was in Left Hall, Beeston Spring, Westmoreland at the old family house where most of us grew up.
Don't want to divert but I must let you know that Mammy is the person who had the biggest impression on me.
Still a work in progress, but she molded and nurtured me into who I am today. May her soul rest in peace.
Back to the event...
Yes, as usual we had lots of food and music! As customary, individuals from the district, not necessarily family members, joined in too.
By the way Cardo, my brother, also took the opportunity to present his wife to the rest of the family. He got married back in November.
Family Reunion December 2008 was great!
Thanks everyone who shared in it. Thank you Uncle Toney, the chief organizer!
SCROLL DOWN to see some of the pictures we took.
You'll see a Duck Ants Nest and a Donkey, NO, those were not part of the family :-)
