jamaica marijuana

by Bill
(Columbus Ohio)

At 55 years, above middle class business owner, I think that the whole legal or not legal deal on weed is much overstated. I believe that Weed should be legalized and taxed. I do not understand the governments stand on it.

Too much is spent on putting regular folks in jail over it.

I think it is over 600,000 people are currently serving time over small amounts.
Some points:
I have never seen or heard of anyone smoking weed:
... beating someone up in a bar.
... beating his wife or kids.
... dying from overdose
... getting sick and vomiting all over the place.

While in Jamiaca last week... I saw many locals on the west end near Treasure Beach partaking in the stuff. Not hurting anyone.
Going about their business.

Total bull crap in my opinion to keep spending money on the "fight aginst weed"

Marijuana should be legal, here are the reasons

by V
(UK)

Jamaican Marijuana Plant

Jamaican Marijuana Plant

It should be legal!

The only reason cannabis is illegal in the world is because it threatened the timber industry in the early 1900's so a business man influenced the US government to make the drug illegal.

Ironically, it can be beneficial to the community and is one of the least harmful drugs.

It is less harmful than drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes and it does create much less problems to the country than alcohol.

If they make the drug legal then the crime rate would be reduced as growing, selling and purchasing is not a crime - so they are getting rid of some crime.... and they are helping the population as the users don’t have to sneak around purchasing from dodgy people who my lace the drug or sell them something that could severely damage them.

If the drug was made legal (like they have proposed and done in California due to the high rate of cannabis use and it's potential to the economy) the economy in Jamaica would be benefited, as it is a multimillion $ industry

If the government sells it in a special store like alcohol (and what California are hoping to do) they can put tax on it and make money.

Another benefit to the public is that it is a natural pain killer. In the US the government use cannabis as painkiller-medicinal marijuana, because there are no harsh chemicals and the drug is not addictive.

So pharmacies could just distribute and use this as a painkiller.

Yes it has been said that cannabis is a gate way to harder drugs such as cocaine and what not, but that is only because the people who sell cannabis also sell harder drugs.

However, if cannabis was legal and sold on the streets or in shops, the consumer would not have to come in contact with the drug dealer who sells harder drugs therefore they would not try it. Not a gate way drug then is it?

Look at Amsterdam?
There isn’t anything wrong happening there is it right? it is a great place to visit... the crime rate is not that high and education standards are high but they have cannabis legal there.

One hundred (100) years ago alcohol was made legal due to the economics at the time, the government could have made money selling alcohol, so why not do that this time with cannabis?

It is a great way to reduce crime, stop people smoking dodgy weed and dying, stopping people progressing onto harder drugs and helping the economy.

Yes, it should be legalized

by Anon

ganja nursery

I am 15 years old and I already love weed.

I personally think that it should be legalized because its not as bad as everybody claims it to be.

I don’t even live in Jamaica but I am going to stand up for any weed smoker out there, cause weed I think is safer then alcohol because if you stop smoking its going to wear off in a matter of time.

Unlike alcohol, you have to sleep off and it doesn’t even matter if the law says we cant smoke cause we are going to do it anyway so why not just legalize it so we don’t have to hide it anymore. I hope the "law" changes there mind and soon.

Sincerely,
Your fellow stoner

A truth that MUST be realized by all.

by Child of the Great Spirit
(Nu Jeru)

A "Drug" in my opinion is something that was manufactured by man.

Marijuana is a "PLANT" that was created with this planet like all other life. Marijuana should be legalized worldwide, no contest.

As far as we know, we get one shot at life and we should be able to live it however we so choose.

Instead, we live in fear of the consequences brought upon us by those in power for trying to obtain true freedom. It's simple. If you do not like Marijuana then don't use it.

If you do like and/or need it then use it. As long as it is used responsibly and/or regulated like alcohol and cigarettes (tobacco in general),

I see no reason why it should be illegal. Make your own decisions and live freely or continue to wear your shackles and live the way that "THEY" want you to. Peace!

Very Much So

by Ganja Mon
(U.S.A)

I do think that Ganja should be legal.

For the most part we all as a people should be able to smoke the herb for it does not have the effect as government wants us to believe.

Like most articles I read on the subject of Ganja most of the people use it as a way of meditation and relaxation.

It's a way of escaping the bad in the world and the main thing is that anyone who has ever smoked Ganja knows that it is a spiritual journey.

To end this I must say legalize it. t will never change people will always smoke the herb for it is a way of life...

Legalize it? Why not

by Cordell
(Michaelson)

God made earth, plants, mountains, hills, ocean, everything. Man cannot make marijuana illegal. Man cannot imprison someone for smoking it if god created it and lets it still thrive upon this earth.

If it is illegal should god be imprisoned for letting it still thrive.

legalize marijuana - it's overdue!

by Donald D.
(pheonix az)

Just legalize it already. It was legal in the US til like 1938 or so. Have you ever hear of a man beating his wife because he was high. NO.

I bet you've heard of men beating there wives because they were drunk though right. AND ALCOHOL IS LEGAL. I don't know of anyone robbing people and stuff for weed money.

Cocaine, herione, and other hard drugs people will do anything to get there fix. Just quit screwing around and legalize it.

it should be legal

by bushwick
(apopka, fl,USA)

1) Its a natural plant.
2) Its the biggest cash crop and the most smuggled illegal substance in the world.
3) Its good for many medical aliments, both physical & psychological.
4) It has no scientifically proven harmful affects, neither long term or short-term and is far less harmful for you than alcohol or tobacco

(Anheuser busch is one of the biggest contributor, to lobbyists, who lobby to keep it illegal. Why? Because it’s serious competition to alcohol!) .

5)And the biggest reason of all....because it's our rights ya know!!

Legalize and i will advertise.

no plant should ever be made illegal anywhere

by Larry
(Pennsylvania USA)

All men are created equal, right? So what gives some men or woman the right to prohibit something given and created for all.

Corruption, confusion, murder and profiteering is the only thing that prohibiting plants has ever done, period.

Not to mention increased abuse, curious desire in youth and easier access (dealers dont usually card people) than truly controlled intoxicating substances such as alcohol.

"Out-of-control" sustances is what's truly created. That is proven over and over again in so many ways. You either have to choose not to see it or just be ignorant of the ridicoulusly" high" margins of a" controlled market", literally creating a "buzz" before anyone even gets near it.

Smoking anything in public should be illegal, crack should be illegal but coca leaf should not, "do not curse the blessings because of the curse" even keep hashish illegal but not the raw produce of the original plant.

That would be like playing God in judgement picking and choosing what parts of creation the people are "allowed" to have, literally creating cause & effect scenarios mentioned above. P.S. plants produce everything we need starting with oxygen!
Thank You and may Yah bless
Lar

Marijuana should most definitely be legalized in Jamaica

by Henry
(United States)

Marijuana should most definitely be legalized, not just decriminalized.

The plant itself is SO prolific throughout the island that it's just not practical for the government to pass up an opportunity to strengthen the economy.

Some of the poorer class rely on the plant because it is guaranteed to sell- both locals and tourists use, and tourism is one of its largest industries.

If the tourism and ganja industries worked in tandem, Jamaica could make a RIDICULOUS amount of money, because just the idea of a legal high would attract tourists, not to mention the beautiful beaches.

Amsterdam certainly makes its share of money, and while it IS pretty and cultural, it doesn't have the touristic flair that Jamaica does.

Don't get me wrong, marijuana is a mind-altering substance. But you never hear of anybody getting hurt while using it, and it's not addicting. It ISN'T worse than alcohol, and it is NOT more dangerous.

I don't know if this is any help...but those are my opinions. Does anybody know of an online petition we can sign?

Legalizing Marijuana in Jamaica

by Rachael Graham
(London England)

I think it should be Illegal to sell it.

My views on this is that the Herb is good for quite a lot of illness and most people do not have the money for Medicine therefore if it is use as medicine by brewing it to drink there should be nothing wrong with that.

But we must remember that some people have additive spirit and if they are hooked on any Drug what soever They will do anything to get it.

Some people would rather buy Drugs than feed their Children. They would steal from any one young or old, We must remember that there are some who mix it with the other things which cause Mental illness later in their lives.

There are some people who's minds are easily taken over by most things, Drugs, Drink, Violent Movies etc,

I don't think the Government should put people in prison for Marijuana there are worst crimes out there to be solved, If there are Adults out there who force young people to sell or take any form of Drugs they should pay the penalty.

Marijuana should now be use as it was intend for, Herbal Teas for Healing some people with certain illness.

What we must also remember every on has a Brain but not everyone's Brain is equip to with stand any Drug at all be it mild or strong. Marijuana can changepeople's Manor and attitude which can or may offend other How ever' I do believe people have the right to do what they want in their own homes as long as it is not hurting anyone.

What is needed in Jamaica and should be very LEGAL EDUCATION FOR THE OLD AS WELL AS THE YOUNG LACK OF KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION,MORE WAYS TO BUILD -CREATE JOBS IO HELP PEOPLE DEVELOP SELF-WORTH: There is so much to JAMAICA and some skillful people living in Jamaica, Share your Knowledge and give confidence to those who believe that there's nothing to do, Such sayings as no Bady Na Gi We Not Tin should stop, We need to put those Minds to work Why isn't there a group of people who are able to get together and make Tea Bags for Herbal use? If we use Marijuana for tea I can assure you it will make a difference all over the world.

Lets get creative put our mind to work create JOBS FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO WORK. THIS IS ANOTHER WAY TO IMPROVE JAMAICA.

Yes, marijuana should be legal in Jamaica.

by Craig
(miami, florida)

Marijuana is legal in some States in the US for medical purposes.

In California for example, a marijuana superstore just opened. I would like to know why Jamaica can't legalize the herb without sanctions from the US.

If the US can cultivate and use legally, is that not some sort of double standard? Have anyone tried to approach Barrack Obama with the strong reasons why Jamaica should legalize marijuana?

Does Amsterdam face the same sanctions for legalizing marijuana? Legal Jamaican herb would be a big boost to the Jamaican economy as far as tourism, taxing, free up the court system from something that will never go away in Jamaica etc...

Maybe this so called war on drugs put US dollars in the politicians pocket so he can continue to make marijuana illegal. Something is just not adding up.

Legalizing the weed would make things a lot better

Jamaicans do not like to be pushed around nor held under subjection.

legalizing the weed would make things a lot better where violence related to the product is concerned.

By this I mean that, if producers are not targeted they will just do their business and go their merry way but the mere fact that they are constantly targeted will make them very rebellious.

In short -let go the weed! it has a lot to add to our economy if managed properly.

Legalizing Ganja Is a Really Great Idea

by Natasha
(Philadelphia,US)

Well its a good idea first off because that's is Rastafarian religion...

Second Ganja is Good..Maybe Not healthy but it relaxes the mind...

And well third My boyfriend is from Jamaica and i asked him why he smokes so much Ganja and he told me that it was in his DNA so obviously that tells me hes not the only Rude Boy smoking it up....

And i have another good reason...If Ganja was legalized in Jamaica there would be a lot more tourist coming to smoke it up on the island..perfect setting..peaceful..relaxing and high it wouldnt get any better than that i know that id be there everyday for the rest of my life...

Cocaine made Miami, so weed can BUILD Jamaica

by Price
(Jamaica)

If weed was legal it could be cultivated and exported for medicinal purposes, which could make the country's economy a bit better than it is now.

I don’t see the reason to make marijuana illegal and all it does is make you relax, I am writing from what I have experienced, not what I have heard.

I have been smoking marijuana for 5 years now and “mi blaze ganja" every morning before going to my office (keeps you calm through the day but you will have to take a shower or else you will be 'frass' on the job).

On the other hand if this unique herb remains illegal then the nation will continue to senselessly destroy one of the best herbs in the world.

I really think the feds should spend more time to cut down on crack which is the main reason why there are so many homeless, insane people living around us. When a crack head needs his crack he/she will do anything in the to get it THATS ADDICTION while on the other hand I never see a ganja man a put himself out of the way to get it.

Sometime I don’t go get it cause the sun too hot but tell any coke head to swim through a pond with crocodiles and see how fast him kill himself for it. I smoke for comfort, relaxation, to get high, meditate.

And pre dis them say weed is a very harmful drug "is lie dem a tell" it didn’t do me no harm, but surprisingly tobacco which is legal causes chest pain, vomiting and on the box it tell you say it causes cancer!

I think they legalize tobacco because poor people don’t have the equipment to process the product for the market so only the bigger heads eat food but on the other hand if weed is legalized it doesn’t have to go through any process except drying so it would be easy for the poor to make a fortune out of it but society doesn’t want it.

I poor people become rich there wouldn’t be as much housemaids, gardeners and cook to work for them to make life easier for them. It all leads back to slavery, minimum wage is the bondage.

marijuana brings income for the poor

by John
(Seattle, WA USA)

Ganja is a reliable income source for the lower economic groups that are in the greatest need.

When a person can grow a product and sell the fruits of his labor, he not only has income but retains his pride by not going on the dole.

Yes, legalize it.

legalised the weed

by tanieka

Yes i think marijuana should be legal in jamaica so that they can used it in the agcultural sector and possibly export it to other countries for medincal purposes.

With this the country would get a lot foreign exchange that may help to pay their debts and the Jamaican people would not have to paid so much tax.

Come on Jamaica.

You already know that over half of the country uses herb. People only get caught in the big cities such has Kingston. And people can still bribe police to let them off anyways.

Rastafarian's consume herb in Jamaica like no other, and it's wrong for them to be persecuted for a law that is not even enforced hardly. Besides, this the healing of the nation.

Have a Christ blessed day

Marijuana Should Be Legalized

by Karen Jackson
(Bridgeport, Connecticut)

Meeting My Sister At JFK

Meeting My Sister At JFK

Marijuana should be legalized for several reasons but I will mention a few.

The commercial properties that marijuana can bring will end oil dependency. It was a threat to the timber and oil corporations.

With H1N1 and many others that may develop there are different traits/genes of marijuana that can shut the PHARMA Industry.

The WTO,WHO,and the world bank will not allow that to threaten corporations profits.

Jamaican politicians and her people are controlled by unseen puppet strings but recognized and beckoned by the few whom are seen as being in control so marijuana will never be legalized.

People should grow their own in their homes for their own medical uses and preference.

Marijuana should be legalized

by Juggalo
(Ohio,USA)

Marijuana should be legalized in every country, simply because it is really no different than alcohol or any other legal substance.

Is there really any good reason for it to be illegal?

In my opinion, there is not. If it is legalized, people will still do what they do now, they can just be more open about it. If the governments don't legalize it, people will use it all the same, they just can't be open about it and it's another thing for the police to arrest people for.

It's the people's choice whether to use it or not, who is the government to tell us we cannot?

Yes, it should be legal

by Mark
(California)

I believe marijuana (ganja, pot, weed, etc) should be legal everywhere, not just in Jamaica. Weed never hurt anyone and it does no harm.

The harm comes when the system arrests and/or imprisons someone for having some ganja. The freed resources from legalizing ganja could be better used to help everyone.

The green herb should be legal. The reason it is not, is because of the big oil corporations would be put out of action permanently. The herb can be use to make petro. So as long as the oil companies rule, the laws to legalize it will be constantly be repulsed by them.

Marijuana in Jamaica: It will be legal

by Renney
(Miss., Ontario, Canada)

ganja_leaf

ganja_leaf

Cannabis (marijuana) was never illegal in Jamaica until the twentieth century.

Spured on by the marijuana tax act of 1937 in the USA, if you consider the name cannabis and its relationship to canvas, you will understand the important part that cannabis (marijuana) played in the discovery of Jamaica and the Americas.

The sails for the ships of Christopher Columbus were made of cannabis hemp fibers; the ropes, riggins and maps, and oil for their lamps and torches.

The high protein meal (gruel) left over after pressing the oil rich seeds was a staple food source. The dried flowers and leaves are also used for their medicinal properties.

Cannabis was once a first class natural resource before its proibition and subsequent criminalization.

It is to many people the single most important plant on the earth; certainly the most versitile and resistant to various climates and elevations.

It has also withstood over seventy years of deliberate eradication campaign by the most powerful nation on earth and still stands as champion.

The billions of dollars that have being spent on the war on marijuana in Jamaica and the world throughout the seventy years, and the countless lives and property that have been distroyed; is in itself a crime against not only humanity but the planet.

The rastaman reason that, if JAH created cannabis then man cannot criminalize it. Many countries and governments are reforming their cannabis laws to reflect the renewed understanding and knowledge that today's lovers of cannabis are spreading.

Through music and art, many heroes and mortars have played their part in re-educating the masses of the value of this truely prescious plant.

Jamaica has produced Bob Marley and the Wailers and the new generation of reggae musicians and artists to a cause that is second to none but slavery.

The history, politics, religion and reality of the twenty-first century has ushered in the inevitable; not if, but when marijuana in Jamaica will be legal.

Make (Marijuana) Ganja Legal

by Ray Tempus
(New York, NY, USA)

Make it legal!! It will add 10 billion dollars a year to the economy.

Think about it, tourism is a 2 billion a year industry as it is. Follow the Amsterdam model and you boost those tourist dollars many fold. Coffee bars or rum bars with weed minus.

A Caribbean Ibeza will be just a couple of hours from America. I'll personally invest in beach bars that serve high grade ganja to go with the high grade coffee and the high grade rum.

Pick up a copy of my new book, "Weed & Whiskey" by Ray Tempus on amazon.com or B&N.com . Available 10/10/08. The idea is explained in detail.
