Contest Entry #025 - Sea Turtles And Beautiful Beaches
This is a black sand beach in a western part of Portland, Jamaica. Because the of color, the sand soaks up a lot of the heat and if often too hot to walk barefoot on or enjoy a nice sunbathe on.
The best thing about this beach, besides its beauty, is that it is the home of many sea turtle nests!
Sea turtles inexplicably return to where they were born years ago to lay their own nests. This is one reason why coastal development can be dangerous to the species, if a resort or home had been built here, the adult turtle would be confused and therefore not had a place to lay eggs and further their generations.
Local organizations are involved in turtle monitoring on this beach which involves covering the tracks of the laying adult turtle and frequently checking the nests to ensure the eggs had not been poached by humans or animals.
They also return at the estimated hatching time to assist the baby turtles in making it across the hot sand and into the sea where they will begin their lives . Doesnโt that just make it even more beautiful?
