Photo Contest Entry #45 - One Love in Port Maria
From October 17 to October 21, 2016, a team of 39 overseas volunteers conducted an eye care clinic at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Port Maria, St. Mary.
We were able to provide 1550 local people with eye exams, prescription glasses, reading glasses, and sunglasses.
We also provided health exams consisting of blood pressure and blood sugar screening. All of these services are given free of cost.
The name of our program is iCARE and the organization is Great Shape! Inc.
We have been providing free eye care services annually since 2009 in partnership with the Sandals Foundation.
In the last 8 years we have served over 25,100 Jamaicans and performed 104 free cataract surgeries!
All of the volunteers feel honored and blessed to serve in Jamaica. It teaches us each day the important life lesson that you can’t give more than you get back. We give in the spirit of one love.
Connected to the beautiful historic church building is Emmanuel Basic School – full of beautiful children. They were very interested in our work and they watched us intently.
This photo was taken at the entrance doorway of the school during our mission.
