Krispy Kreme (which for a long time we only heard about and saw on social media in Jamaica) the iconic American doughnut chain known for its "Hot Light" doughnuts, has quickly become very popular in Jamaica since its somewhat recent launch in May 2023. Can you believe it already has four locations across the island?

Locally, Krispy Kreme is operated by Restaurant Associates Limited (RAL), a well-known franchise holder for some of our most popular fast food brands in Jamaica, including Burger King, Popeyes Chicken & Seafood, and Little Caesars Pizza.

The first Jamaican store was opened on Waterloo Road in Kingston. Since then Krispy Kreme has been on an expansion journey, probably driven by the enthusiasm of doughnut lovers like myself and countless others thrilled to try something new.

The stage was set for rapid growth since day one when some 300 people waited for the doors to finally open. The opening day in Kingston saw over 300 patrons, which set the stage for the company's rapid growth. Krispy Kreme’s signature original glazed doughnuts and other favourites like chocolate iced glazed, strawberry iced glazed with sprinkles, caramel Kreme crunch, and cinnamon apple filled, were being handed out as free samples, which was a nice gesture considering that patrons were at the location as early as 5 am awaiting the grand opening.

The unique Hot Light Theatre Shop concept, where customers can witness the doughnut production process, has been a key attraction since then. As a customer, you get a front-row seat to see how the doughnuts are made, from start to finish, which in itself is a unique experience. This interactive element has contributed to the brand's popularity, making each visit an event to remember.

The popularity of Krispy Kreme sparked a debate, comparing which doughnut is better, the popular American brand or our local favourite, Prestige Donuts. While many love Krispy Kreme just fine, especially the many flavours to choose from, in their coffee and drinks, most reviews point to the fact that it is much too sweet, compared to Prestige’s more balanced options.

Sticking to their commitment to expanding, Krispy Kreme has opened another location in Portmore, intending to reach new customers. It’s conveniently located opposite the trendy Portmore Mall.

Besides tasty doughnuts and drinks, we have something else to thank Krispy Kreme for, jobs. Krispy Kreme's success in Jamaica has also brought employment opportunities, with over 100 Jamaicans now working across the four locations. So while we support them, it is not one-sided as they support our local economy. Bradley Perkins, Assistant Brand Manager at Krispy Kreme, expressed the company's enthusiasm in an interview, saying, "Our commitment to delivering freshly made, high-quality doughnuts remains unwavering, and we are excited to continue serving doughnut enthusiasts of all ages in our newest location."

Though new to us, internationally Krispy Kreme has a global presence with 1,810 branded outlets. On the business side of things, the company's international expansion includes franchise agreements in Switzerland, Costa Rica, and Chile, along with a joint venture in France with Columbus Café & Co. In October 2022, Krispy Kreme opened its first store in Jordan, further extending its reach in the Middle East.

Krispy Kreme has also demonstrated strong financial performance, with a 10% net revenue growth for the third quarter of 2022, reaching sales of $377.5 million. With numbers like that, the company will likely continue to expand. Soon, wherever you are a Krispy Kreme will probably be somewhere within reach.

So while as Jamaicans we will remain loyal to our Prestige Doughnuts, Krispy Kreme has shown us that they bring something new and exciting to the table. So far we have been enjoying it to the fullest.
