If you've ever dreamed of travelling to exotic destinations, learning new languages, and making friends from all over the world while getting paid for it, then a career as a flight attendant might be the perfect choice for you. Yes, you can make your childhood dream of becoming a flight attendant a reality right here in Jamaica.

Why Choose a Career as a Flight Attendant?

Being a flight attendant offers unique perks like free flights to various cities, exposure to different cultures, and the opportunity to taste diverse cuisines. Beyond these attractions, flight attendants also earn a competitive salary and receive additional benefits like hotel accommodations and meal allowances when travelling.

However, the role is highly competitive, with more applicants than available positions. In truth, I can count on 1 hand how many times I have ever seen a job posting for a flight attendant. But donโ€™t let that deter you from deciding if this is your dream career.

What Does a Flight Attendant Do?

As you can imagine, whether you have been on an aeroplane or not, flight attendants are responsible for the safety and comfort of airline passengers. From pre-flight briefings to assisting passengers during emergencies, they play a crucial role in ensuring smooth flight operations. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Attending pre-flight briefings
  • Ensuring adequate supplies and emergency equipment are on board
  • Demonstrating emergency procedures to passengers
  • Serving food and beverages
  • Assisting passengers with special needs
  • Administering first aid when necessary
  • Directing passengers in case of an emergency

Essential Skills for Flight Attendants

To become a flight attendant, there are some key skills that you must possess to fulfil your duties properly, they include:

  • Attentiveness: Ability to stay alert to passengers' needs for a pleasant travel experience.
  • Communication skills: Clear and effective communication with passengers and colleagues.
  • Customer-service skills: Poise, tact, and resourcefulness in stressful situations.
  • Listening skills: Ability to give full attention to passengers and respond appropriately.
  • Proper vision: Correctable to at least 20/40.

Flight attendants often have a variable schedule, working nights, weekends, and holidays. A typical on-duty shift lasts 12 to 14 hours, and attendants usually fly between 75 to 90 hours a month, spending an additional 50 hours on the ground for preparation and report writing. They might spend two to three nights a week away from home, with hotel accommodations and meal allowances provided by their employer.

Qualifications and Training for Flight Attendants in Jamaica

A minimum high school diploma is required to become a flight attendant, like any other career. Most airlines offer training programs for selected candidates, but prior customer service experience is beneficial. There are not many flight attendant training programs in Jamaica. The Colbourne College offers an airline training course. You can also reach out to the Caribbean Aviation & Training Centre at Tinson Pen in Kingston about their available training options. Here is a breakdown of the minimum requirements based on a job post I saw.

  • Minimum of five (5) CXC / GCE Ordinary level passes, including English and Math.
  • At least two (2) years of customer service experience.
  • Basic competency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Flight Attendant Swimming certification.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate.
  • Height between 5โ€™ 3โ€ and 6โ€™ 2โ€.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish.
  • Possession of a valid Jamaican passport.

Colbourne College- The Airline Travel Training Course is a comprehensive 12-week program designed for aspiring flight attendants, focusing on three core areas of study. The curriculum includes cabin crew training, which provides essential knowledge and skills for flight attendants; applied customer service, which encompasses basic ticketing processes, make-up, and grooming; and conversational Spanish and French, which are tailored for airline operations. The full tuition for the course is $540, covering all three unitsโ€”flight attendant training, customer care, and foreign language studies. This course is an ideal pathway for those seeking a career in the airline industry, offering practical training and multilingual skills to meet the demands of international air travel.

While being a flight attendant in Jamaica is uncommon and the openings are scarce, if you have ever dreamt of becoming one, this is your sign to pursue that dream.
