Are There Tours to Visit the Maroons in Accompong or Moore Town?

Question from Paul, London:

"I’ve heard about the Maroons growing up. Are there tours in Accompong or Moore Town where I can learn about them?"

Answer by Wellesley:

Hi Paul! That’s a wonderful question. Yes, there are absolutely tours that let you explore the rich history and living culture of the Maroons in both Accompong and Moore Town.

In Accompong, which is tucked away in the hills of St. Elizabeth, you can find guided tours that include visits to the Kindah Tree (a powerful Maroon symbol of peace), the community museum, and historic sites. Many of these tours are led by Maroons themselves, and some even include lunch and drumming sessions. If you're in Jamaica around January 6th, definitely try to attend the annual Accompong Maroon Festival—it’s a vibrant celebration of music, food, culture, and heritage.

In fact, I actually featured this exact celebration in one of my YouTube videos, and I highly recommend giving it a watch: 🎥 Watch: Accompong Maroon Festival Celebration on My Island Jamaica

For Moore Town, located in the Blue and John Crow Mountains of Portland, you can take part in cultural tours known as the “Kromanti Experience.” These usually include visits to Nanny Falls, Nanny's Monument, and insights into Windward Maroon traditions, music, herbal medicine, and oral history.

Both communities welcome visitors who are genuinely interested in learning about their way of life. And because the tours are community-led, your support also goes directly back into preserving these rich traditions.

If you’d like help connecting with a reputable tour operator or planning your visit, feel free to reach out again—I’d be happy to assist!
