Bob Marley, The Man - A Poem by Denise Salmon

by Denise Salmon
(Kingston)

Bob Marley, The Man

Bob Marley, The Man

Bob Marley, The Man

He wanted love, peace and unity to reign
So his people would never be enslaved again
And even though murderers tried to kill him
He never stopped trying to air the peoples' problems

When he sang about the "Natural Mystic blowing in the air"
He sang from a heart that really knew how to care
He sang when he didn't want the women to weep
His lyrics came from a place that was quite deep

Reggae music flowed from him like a river not a stream
He created and lived his own wonderful dream
He travelled to many places far and near
The sweet reggae beat is what he would share

For him music was not a game
That is why we can never forget his name
It has been a while since he has moved on
But his music still helps people to carry on

He knew peace and unity would bring prosperity
And deliver his people from mental slavery
So he kept on singing from his heart
He wanted them to make a brand new start

He sang about his past, present and future
And he never forgot his roots and culture
He knew that some would be tired to see his face
But he was determined to stay in the race

There is a museum now at the place where he lived
Because even in death this man still has a lot to give
Come and see his personal treasure where they are displayed
Come and see where the sweet Reggae music was made

Visit the place where he now rests
After he had given the world his very best
The Zion Bus has a dreadlocked driver and conductor
You'll hear stories about Bob when he was much younger

As you rock to the sound of the sweet reggae beat
Driving through Claremont and seeing that view is really a treat

So a visit to his place of birth must be a part of your plan
Yes we was born and buried in the parish of St Ann

He did all he could to set his people free
But sadly, a lot of them are still held in captivity

A remarkable poem
by: Helen

Bob Marley - the lover, the father, the musician, the rebel, the prophet - a legend. His music and the power of his lyrics will never die. He surely wasn't perfect but also for that reason, he should be an inspiring example for the Jamaican youth. One Love.
