Breaking! Jamaica Records Its First Case Of Coronavirus
At 12:00pm today, March 10, 2020 there is one confirmed (imported) case of the Covid-19 Coronavirus in Jamaica.
The Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton called a press conference at 12:00pm today at his Ministry's New Kingston Head Office after, according to him, he received the report at 11:00am.
He told the special press conference that the patient is in isolation at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston.
The (female) patient arrived in Jamaica on March 4 from visiting the UK. Dr. Tufton noted that the patient’s infection was travel-related and noted that measures were immediately taken to prevent the potential of community spread.
Among those steps, he indicated, were:
the dispatching of a team of health officials to the home of the patient for an assessment and initiation of public health measures,
the identification and 'contact tracing' for all possible persons exposed
A meeting with ministry officials and members of staff at the University hospital and the necessary interventions put in place.
Dr. Carl Bruce, said he is very comfortable with the procedures and equipment employed to comfortably manage this issue.
The Health Minister advised the media conference that an advisory committee has been appointed to help further guide Jamaica's response to the virus.
Meanwhile three (3) additional countries were included on the list of countries with travel restrictions, namely Spain, France and Germany.
Travel restrictions remain on China, Italy, South Korea, Singapore, and Iran, making the total count to 8.
While outlining the plans and preparations taken, he mentioned that there are now four designated isolation facilities in Jamaica which are adequately prepared.
We'll continue to keep you posted. Of course, if we welcome your feedback.
