Can I Ship Plants or Trees from the U.S. to Jamaica?

by Kelvin MEEKINS
(USA)

Question from Kelvin, USA:

Can trees and shrubs from the United States be shipped to Jamaica? I'm building a house in Jamaica.

Hey Kelvin! Thanks for the question bredrin—and big up on the homebuilding journey here in Jamaica. I know you probably have a few favorite plants you’d love to see flourish right in your Jamaican yard, but when it comes to importing trees and shrubs, things do get a bit technical.

In short: yes, it’s possible to bring in trees and shrubs from the U.S., but only if you go through the proper process. Jamaica is very protective of its local agriculture, and for good reason. So anything plant-based that’s entering the country has to meet specific requirements and be approved by the Plant Quarantine Division, which falls under Jamaica’s Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries.

Here’s how it usually works:

You’ll need a phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country (in this case, the U.S. Department of Agriculture), confirming the plants are free from pests and diseases. Then before they enter Jamaica, the Plant Quarantine Division will inspect the shipment. If it doesn’t meet the criteria or poses any risk, they can deny entry.

To start the process, you (or your shipper) should contact the Plant Quarantine office in Jamaica directly to find out the current requirements, and whether the specific trees or shrubs you're planning to bring are even allowed. Some species may be prohibited altogether, depending on their risk level.

You might also consider buying similar varieties locally—a lot of nurseries across Jamaica (especially in St. Catherine, Mandeville, or Montego Bay) carry beautiful tropical and ornamental plants that thrive better in our soil and climate.

So yes, it’s doable—but only with proper paperwork and inspections. I’d recommend you call the Plant Quarantine Division at (876) 977-0637 or 977-2489, or check in with the Ministry of Agriculture's website for their latest guidelines before you make any moves.
