by Rebecca Sloan

QUESTION:

I have a Jamaican 5 dollar coin, can I spend it in the USA or is it just good in Jamaica?

If you can let me know it would help me out.
My email address is **email removed**. Thanks

Hi Rebecca,

I doubt you'll be able to spend that in the USA - unless it is at a Jamaican establishment or if someone choose to trade it with you for their souvenir collection.

At today's rate (84JA to 1USD) the JA$5 is worth only USD$0.0595. I doubt that is worth any effort to get it spent.

As usual, I am posting your question with my response in real time on our blog, that way if anyone sees your posting they can add their comment.

It will also be posted on our facebook fan page so I am inviting you to follow the responses over there as well. Our address is http://facebook.com/myislandjamaica.

If you wish you can read more about our local currency here as well.
