"Can you bury someone in a dirt grave in Jamaica? It used to be a practice in times gone by."
John, you’re absolutely right—dirt graves were once a common sight across rural Jamaica, especially in districts like yours in St. Elizabeth. Families would prepare a grave in their yard or on family land, mark it with stones or a wooden cross, and cover it with earth. It was a longstanding tradition, especially when funeral homes weren’t readily available, or funds were limited.
These days though, the practice is more tightly regulated. According to Jamaican law, burials must now take place in approved cemeteries or burial grounds that are registered with the local Parish Council or Municipal Corporation. That means while a “dirt grave” is still technically allowed, it must be within a legal cemetery, and the burial must be properly recorded with the authorities. Private land burials require special approval, and in most cases, they're discouraged due to public health and legal concerns.
So while the spirit of the tradition is still alive in many areas, especially in the deep rural parts of Jamaica, families now usually opt for burial within a cemetery - often still covered by earth, but usually in a concrete vault, depending on the cemetery’s rules and the family’s wishes. It's worth speaking directly with the St. Elizabeth Parish Council to see what options are available in Maggoty or nearby.
