Jamaican Breadfruit Punch Recipe

Jamaican Breadfruit Punch Recipe || Jamaican Recipe Contest Entry #13

Breadfruit is a very versatile food, used in a variety of ways in the Jamaican diet as a starch for breakfast, lunch or dinner, among other uses.

One lesser known use of the fruit, however, is in the form of a punch/smoothie. I experimented with the following recipe after receiving too many breadfruits from a friend and not wanting them to go to waste. The result was rather enjoyable and refreshing.

Ingredients

½ small mature breadfruit (cut in chunks)
3-4 cups water
1-2 cups milk (any kind)
1 small supligen (optional)
½ bottle stout {Guinness, dragon, malta (optional)}
½ tsp salt
½ tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract
¼ tsp nutmeg (liquid or grated)
Sugar/honey to taste

Directions

Bring water to boil, add salt and breadfruit chunks and let boil for another 5 minutes. Remove from flame and allow to cool. Transfer breadfruit chunks to a blender, adding the milk, supligen, stout and spices.

Blend to a smooth consistency, strain (optional) and sweeten to your taste.

Place punch in refrigerator until cool and serve over ice.

NB: For a thinner consistency, add more water.
