Today we will look at the major health benefits and uses of this gem of nature, the Jamaican black castor oil.

But first...

What is the Jamaican Black Castor Oil?

Simply put, it’s castor oil done Jamaican style!

Castor oil is generally created by extracting the oil from the beans or seeds of the castor oil plant and usually has a pale yellowish colour when it is cold-pressed, similar to regular vegetable oil.

Of course, here in Jamaica you know we have to kick it up a notch.

While it has a similar name to the traditional castor oil, you will find that the extraction method for the Jamaican castor oil is completely different.

As such, you will find that this result in a different substance with multiple uses.

This is the process...

The seeds or beans are first roasted (hence the darker colour)

Then crushed in a mortar

Water is added to the crushed beans

Boil the entire mixture open over heavy fire

The Jamaican black castor oil is used for general health and well-being as it has a wide variety of natural remedies.

It can be ingested for digestive health or be used as a topical solution.  I’m sure by now you can’t wait to hear the major benefits and uses of this highly desirable goofy stuff, so here goes...

15 Amazing Benefits and Uses of Jamaican Black Castor Oil

  1. Promote Hair Growth

So, you want a gorgeous head of hair? I believe this might be the most widely known used of the Jamaican black castor oil. There is a very close correlation with this oil and hair growth. It’s considered to be a very natural remedy to help hair to grow thicker, longer, faster. By combining one teaspoon of this castor oil along with a teaspoon of coconut oil and five drops of your favourite essential oil such as peppermint- highly recommended, you can apply to your scalp in circular motions using your finger tips. This massage into the scalp and roots will stimulate blood flow and ultimately lead to rapid hair growth.

  2. Strengthens Hair

The Jamaican black castor oil contains omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids which is a wonder worker for thin hair and hair that breaks easily. A tablespoon of this oil combined with a tablespoon of jojoba oil massaged deep into the scalp of the entire head and left overnight, and washed in the morning will give amazing results.

  3. Heals and Prevents Split Ends

If split ends is a struggle for you, this might be your perfect solution. No need to do the big chop. By just using equal amounts of the Jamaican castor oil and mustard oil and massaging into the scalp and hair down to the ends, this remedy is said to be a sure healer. Wash hair as usual after massage. This process is recommended twice per week for best results.

  4. Moisturize Dry Hair

The Jamaican black castor oil is a great remedy to treat dry hair along with other hair problems such as dandruff or itcy scalp.  If you have ever been disappointed with all those glamorous shampoo ads with promises that don’t actually work, this oil is a great solution. By combining one tablespoon of this oil and a table spoon of olive oil along with juice from half of a lemon, lightly warm in a saucepan and gently massage into scalp for about 10 minutes. Leave in for about half hour and wash as normal.

  5. Prevents Hair Breakage

If you are struggling with weak, easily-broken or damaged hair, the Jamaican black castor oil is worth a shot. You can take a small amount of the oil and just gently massage into scalp and roots. Cover head with plastic wrap and leave in place for about two hours and wash as normal after. You can also leave in overnight for deep conditioning. Many people swear by it although scientific research on this topic is somewhat limited.

    AND WHAT ABOUT THE SKIN?

    Sure! It...

  6. Heals Scars

The Jamaican black castor oil is said to be very effective in entirely removing scars or significantly reducing them.  Though it might not work on every scar depending on how old or how deep it is, it’s certainly worth a try.

It discourages new scar tissue growth while penetrating deeper into the skin and helps to remove the old scar tissue. Just clean the area with soap and water and gently massage a bit of the oil over the scar. Remove any excess oil and wash hands.  Repeat twice daily for best results. After several weeks, the results should be amazing!

  7. Treating Acne

Acne problems can be so frustrating. Whether you are trying to get over your last one or want to prevent another one you can find comfort in knowing that the Jamaican black castor oil can be your solution for a clearer and brighter skin. Put a generous amount in your hands and rub palms together to get it warm, gently massage into face. Then, soak a wash cloth in hot water and use it to wash off the oil. Repeat this twice a week for best results.

  8. Fighting And Treating Infections

The Jamaican black castor oil is well-known for its antifungal and anti bacterial properties which reduces or in some cases prevents the spread of germs. This can be applied as a topical treatment and is relatively safe to use directly on skin without any side effects as it is a an all-natural product.

  9. Healing Chapped Lips

Ever struggled with chapped lips especially during dry, windy or chilly weather? The Jamaican black castor oil is ready to the rescue to help with your moisturizing. An easy remedy is to mix 3 tablespoons of the oil with one tablespoon of butter and one tablespoon of beeswax and melt them together. As soon as they start heating, mix and add five drops of your favourite essential oil. Once mixture is thoroughly combined, pour into an empty lip balm container. Now your treatment is ready to prevent and heal those chapped lips.

  10. Aging Gracefully

The Jamaican black castor oil may be your ticket to a more youthful appearance, getting rid of those fine lines and wrinkles and reducing signs of aging and restoring a natural youthful glow to your skin. After cleansing your skin, pat dry with a towel and pour a small amount of in hands and apply to face and gently massage. Repeat twice daily for best results.

    OTHER AMAZING BENEFITS...

  11.  Relieving Joint Pain

The Jamaican black castor oil is a perfect remedy to relieve sore joints and muscles that ache. By simply making a castor oil pack, you can apply it to you neck, shoulders or back relieving all that pain and tension.

To make the pack, get a piece of wood flannel cloth and soak it in the oil, cover it with a plastic wrap to avoid staining. Add a towel over the plastic wrap and then a heating pad. Apply the pack over affected area for an hour or so and just relax.

  12. Improving Digestion and Bowel Health

If you are constantly struggling with constipation, upset stomach, bowel and other digestive problems, the Jamaican black castor oil might be a great natural remedy. When ingested, the naturally occurring ricinoleic acid found inside the oil, releases and binds to the intestine walls. This results in them contracting and helps the digestive system to work more naturally and smoothly. As a laxative, all you need are a few teaspoonfuls and you are good to go!

  13. Reducing or Alleviating Insomnia

The Jamaican black castor oil is a great remedy if you have trouble falling asleep or remaining asleep throughout the night. By just rubbing one or two drops of this oil on your eyelids and massaging it gently into the skin, it could lead to a very restful or long hours of sleep. Everyone’s experience might be different however. You’ll never know unless you give it a try!

  14. Respiratory Health

If you are struggling with chronic lung problems or bronchitis, the Jamaican black castor oil is a great treatment option that helps to cleanse your lungs. Warm eight ounces of the castor oil and warm it on the stove. Soaking strips of flannel fabric in it.

This can get quite messy so make sure you use a surface that you don’t mind getting oily such as a piece of plastic. Lie on your back and place the soaked strips on chest, sides, lungs and rib-cage. Cover with another sheet of plastic and place a heating pad on top of it. The oil will draw out the toxins resulting in less congestion and feeling better.

  15. Easing Menstrual Cramps

This might not be a popular method to relieve menstrual cramps but the Jamaican black castor oil is said to be very effective in relieving menstrual cramps.  This treatment should start several days before the start of your period to be effective in alleviating the cramps.

To do this, you take a flannel that is large enough to cover your abdomen or any other area you want to treat. This should be soaked in the castor oil but not so much to cause it to drip.

Place it over the abdomen and cover with a plastic wrap to prevent the heat from escaping and then put a heating pad on it. Relax with this for 30-60 minutes allowing the oil to help with easing the cramping.

This remedy should not be used for more than four consecutive days per week in a month.
