Jamaicans, Poem by Christine Laud

We are Jamaicans, and we are proud,
We stand out in the crowd,
Whether it is our dialect or our desire to succeed,
We have no fear, we will take the lead.
We have “no problem man.”
That we have challenges,
But what would life be without them?
So we answer the call on the track,
Breaking records- leaving our mark
We leave nothing to chance,
We swim, we run, we dance
To the beat of our own drums,
From ska to rock steady,
Getting the body ready,
Staying fit in heart and soul.
Beauty contest, no problem there,
We made it onto the world stage,
And took the crown repeatedly…
Reggae music can be heard on every airwave-
The captivating rhythm finds its way to
The heart and soul of every listener…
Our cuisine has gained international acclaim
When tourists can order a dish by name
And salivate while they wait -
Our story is told
By the green black and gold
Proudly waving in the air
In any space that we share -
Though only a speck on the map,
We circle the globe and find our niche
In every nook and cranny
And make our mark in indelible ink.
We were taught to, “Strive for excellence”,
And that is still our defense-
No job too lowly,
No position too lofty-
We are Jamaicans, and we are proud
We stand out in the crowd
“Out of many we are one”
I am proud to be a Jamaican!
