For students in Jamaica aspiring to delve into social sciences, scholarships can be a crucial avenue to ease the financial burden and pave the way for an enriching academic journey. In this article, we will explore some of the available social science scholarships in Jamaica, encouraging students to grasp the opportunities that await them.

Before we dive into the available scholarships that you can apply for, social sciences are not a focus area for most Jamaican scholarships, meaning that while you will find scholarships specifically for sports, arts, science and technology, You will most likely not find any for most social sciences. Even after doing a bit of research, I still have not been able to find any (If you know of any, send us a message and let us know so that we can add it to this list). Despite that, there are many general scholarships available that students in the social sciences field can apply for.

1. The Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) Scholarship Program:

The Poverty Reduction Program (PRP), which seeks applications for its Annual Tertiary Scholarships Program, is providing the JSIF Scholarships. The JSIF has a J$100 million disbursement budget. Each recipient of a JSIF scholarship will be given a maximum of J$350,000. All qualified students enrolled in government-supported tertiary institutions, including teachers' colleges, are eligible to apply for the JSIF Scholarships. Please be aware that programs in law, dentistry, medicine, or nursing, as well as expenses for lodging, are not covered by the PRP financing.

ALL first-year through final-year students at any local university, institution, or trade school are eligible for the JSIF Scholarships. Teachers' colleges, the University of the West Indies, the University of Technology, Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts, and Mico University College are the government-assisted tertiary institutions that qualify for this scholarship program. You must reside in one of the PRP communities listed and actively participate in community work through community-based organizations and/or other volunteer programs to be eligible.

2. The University of the West Indies Scholarship:

The University of the West Indies is one of the most recognised tertiary institutions in Jamaica and the Caribbean. Students enrolled in their faculty of social sciences have access to a variety of scholarships including:

  • Bernie & Ramona Benson Scholarship
  • Bogle's Grant
  • CB/UWI 5K Scholarship
  • Dennis Cohen Scholarship
  • Development Bank of Jamaica Limited Scholarship
  • PricewaterhouseCoopers Scholarship
  • Principal’s Scholarship for Excellence
  • Ralph & Ricky Lauren Bursaries

3. The Jamaica Values and Attitudes (JAMVAT) Scholarship:

The Jamaica Values and Attitudes (JAMVAT) Program aids tertiary students who are admitted but unable to pay their tuition due to financial hardship. Students who have access to this program have the chance to contribute 200 hours of community service to the growth of the social capital of the country. Each student shall receive 30% of the tuition money up to $350,000 after finishing the JAMVAT program.

4. Nationwide News Network Scholarship for Governance

This valuable scholarship opportunity awaits students with a passion for the social sciences at the University. Valued at J $125,000.00 and spanning a year, this scholarship is exclusively available for those enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Social Sciences. It particularly targets students specializing in Political Science, Public Sector Management, or International Relations.

Successful candidates will exhibit exceptional academic performance with a minimum GPA of 3.0, along with evident financial need. Active participation in co-curricular or community activities, coupled with demonstrated leadership qualities, is also considered during the selection process. Shortlisted candidates will undergo an interview conducted by a panel composed of University representatives and members from the sponsoring organization. Moreover, the chosen recipient will have the unique opportunity to complete 100 hours of internship with Nationwide News Network, further enriching their academic experience.

Pursuing a degree in social sciences offers students the chance to better comprehend the complexities of human interactions and societies. Scholarships play a pivotal role in enabling talented individuals to access higher education without being encumbered by financial constraints. The scholarships mentioned above are just a few examples of the opportunities available in Jamaica to support students on their journey to becoming impactful contributors to society. Aspiring social scientists should explore these options and seize the chance to enrich their education while making a lasting difference in their communities
