The Quiet Power of Jackanna Bush: A Hidden Gem of Jamaican Bush Medicine

If you’re the kind of person who loves discovering nature’s secrets — especially those tucked away in the hills of Jamaica — then let me introduce you to one of our lesser-known healing herbs: Jackanna bush.

Now, you may not hear its name thrown around like cerasee or guinea hen weed, but make no mistake — this humble plant carries a legacy of healing, particularly when it comes to women’s health, pain relief, and cleansing.

What Is Jackanna Bush?

Jackanna bush (Jack In The Bush, Christmas Bush), known scientifically as Chromolaena odorata, grows wild all across Jamaica. It’s not cultivated commercially, and it’s not the kind of thing you’ll find packaged on a pharmacy shelf — but in the hills and bushy corners of the countryside, it thrives. By the way, I learned that it is called Acheampong in Ghana.

We featured it in a recent video filmed in Chester Castle, Hanover, with my friend Reggie, a farmer who’s very familiar with the plants that grow naturally around his land. Though he’s not a herbalist, not only has Reggie seen first-hand how this bush is used by folks in the community, he has healthy recollections of using it from he was a child.

Traditional Health Benefits of Jackanna Bush

So from years of stories, personal testimonies, and generational wisdom, Jackanna bush has been trusted for a handful of serious health concerns:

  • Womb Cleansing & Menstrual Support – This is probably its most well-known use. Women have used the tea to cleanse the womb, reduce menstrual cramps, and even help with fibroid issues.

  • Back Pain & Body Aches – The leaves are usually boiled and sipped as tea or added to bath water to help soothe back pain and body aches.

  • Inflammation Support – It’s considered a natural anti-inflammatory and often used when joints are swollen or hurting.

  • Urinary and Internal Cleansing – The diuretic nature of the tea makes it helpful for flushing the system.

  • Spiritual & Physical Bush Baths – Some people still include it in bush baths for both spiritual and physical cleansing.

And by the way, since I posted the video in our community, I've learned that persons traditionally, have used it for a myriad of other issues and ailments. Be sure to take a look at the comments here.

So if you’re exploring natural remedies and reconnecting with your roots, don’t overlook this one. Jackanna bush might not be the flashiest, but it sure is powerful.
