What Are Some Hidden Gems in Western Jamaica for Nature Lovers?

by Christine
(Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada )

Hidden nature spots near Lucea, Jamaica

Question from Christine:

"I am looking for off-the-grid or, in other words, alternatives to the highly marketed tourist excursions/sites such as hiking in nature or nature experiences, particularly in the NW and NS part of the island, such as Hanover, Westmoreland & west St. James. All within a 1 to 1½-hour drive from Lucea."

Answer by Wellesley:

Christine, mi love this question! As someone living right here in Jamaica, especially on the western side, I can tell you that the gems you’re looking for are very much real, they're just a little tucked away from the glossy brochures.

Let’s start with Lethe River Bamboo Rafting. It’s not your typical Martha Brae experience. Lethe is peaceful, scenic, and far less crowded. The raftsmen will take you gently down the river, with limestone foot massages and a history lesson along the way—it’s one of the most relaxing nature-based experiences you can have near Lucea, just under 30 minutes away.

Then there’s Roaring River Cave and Mineral Spring in Westmoreland. It’s ideal for a low-key hike and nature walk, and it’s also culturally rich—the guides there are often locals who grew up in the area and really bring the stories to life.

For something totally unique, make your way to the Jamaica Giants Sculpture Park & Art Gallery also in Westmoreland. It’s a dreamlike mix of nature and art, featuring massive sculptures by world-renowned artists, all spread out along a nature trail. It's a peaceful space where you can wander, take photos, and just reflect.

Looking for waterfalls? YS Falls in St. Elizabeth, though slightly more known, still keeps that off-the-grid charm. It’s a great combo of beauty and serenity—especially if you get there early. You’ll have a chance to swim in natural pools, zipline over the falls, or just enjoy the botanical surroundings. It's about an hour and 15 minutes from Lucea.

If you're a history or architecture buff, consider a stroll past the historic Manning’s School in Savanna-la-Mar - also my alma mater. Founded in the 1700s, it’s one of the oldest schools in the entire Caribbean. While you may not tour inside without special arrangements, just being on those grounds and feeling the history is something else, especially if you're already nearby in Westmoreland.

And of course, for hiking in true natural settings, Hanover offers lovely countryside trails. Some are informal, winding through sugarcane fields and local farmlands, best explored with a local guide for safety and navigation. You might even discover hidden waterfalls or mountain views you wouldn’t find on TripAdvisor.
