Of course, no one ever visits the beautiful island of Jamaica, and a tourist-friendly city like Montego Bay, to ever step foot into a hospital, well, unless those reasons are philanthropic. However, things don’t always go as planned and medical emergencies can happen at any time.

If you are staying in and around Montego Bay, you will have many options for medical centres in the city, some of which operate 24/7. While these are great for basic injuries, they are not fully staffed and do not provide the same services that you would receive at the hospitals in Montego Bay.

Currently, you will find 3 hospitals in Montego Bay, St. James, two of which are private. They are the Cornwall Regional Hospital, Hospiten and Baywest Wellness Hospital. 

1. Cornwall Regional Hospital

The Cornwall regional hospital, located in Mt. Salem, Montego Bay, is a government entity. It was built in 1974 to serve individuals in the county of Cornwall, which includes the parishes of St. James, Hanover, Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth and Trelawny. At the time the hospital was built, it was considered the first multifunctional hospital built in Jamaica since the construction of the University Hospital 21 years prior. 

The hospital, like all public, government-owned healthcare facilities in Jamaica, provides free healthcare services to all citizens and legal residents. While visitors to the island are not required to pay any fees at public hospitals either, in late 2020, the government of Jamaica implemented a mandatory travel insurance fee. As a part of the islands Jamaica Care Programme, visitors are required to pay a fee of $40, this provides them with medical and emergency insurance that values up to $100,000. 

The Cornwall Regional Hospital is a 10 story building and is considered a Type A hospital. Due to the hospital's need for dire repair, it has been going through the stages of restoration since 2019 and is projected to be fully restored, with additional wards, that will allow more bed space by late 2022. Until then, the hospital has been operating by using outbuildings and tents. Some of their operations have also been moved to the Falmouth Hospital.

2. Hospiten

This is one of two private hospitals in Montego Bay and is owned and operated by the Hospiten Group, was opened in October 2015. It is located in the Half Moon area in Montego Bay. As with most private hospitals, the fees can be quite exorbitant, so it is not for the budget-conscious individual.

These costs are in exchange for a very private experience as you will never have to worry about overcrowding or waiting long periods before being assisted. So, if privacy is important to you, then one of the 27 beds at Hospiten would be a great choice for you. 

The hospital offers a range of services that includes neurology, gynaecology, emergency care, cardiology, paediatrics, intensive care, dentistry, and much more. If you wish to visit the hospital you can choose to visit their website to make an appointment or even request a video consultation. Their website openly lists all their specialist and their speciality areas, and you will be able to make direct appointments with whichever specialist you choose. 

One thing that has drawn many Jamaican's attention to Hospiten is that, unlike public hospitals, they allow much more freedom in the delivery room for expectant mothers. Most importantly, mothers have the option of having their spouse or any family member in the delivery room with them. A service that has been lacking across the island. Because of this, families who can spare the additional costs choose Hospiten for childbirth.

3. Baywest Wellness Hospital

Baywest Wellness started in 2012, at the Baywest plaza in Montego bay, as just a medical centre with two doctors. It has since then expanded to include the Baywest Wellness Fairview Clinic and is now the Baywest Wellness Hospital located in the Half Moon Shopping Village. 

They provide a wide range of medical specializations, as well as high-quality care from their compassionate and skilled team. These doctors come from some of the best academic programs in the region, and they bring novel techniques to treating diseases and other conditions with them. In addition, Baywest Wellness offers some of the best in pregnancy care, specializing in both prenatal and postnatal care. Their professionals ensure that deliveries are pleasant and safe for all parties involved. They may now be compared to a one-stop shop for everything relating to babies, delivery, and the care that comes with it.

Medical and speciality clinics, pregnancy care and delivery, operating theatre for major and minor surgeries, surgical services, imaging (CT scan, ultrasound, x-ray, mammography), lab services, maternity wards, neonatal services (phototherapy units) and premature delivery management are currently available at their new facility. This facility also includes a total of Fifteen (15) bed suites which means you’ll never have to worry about overcrowding.

Visiting a hospital may not be a part of your plan for your next trip to Montego Bay, however, just in case you need to, these are your options for hospitals in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
