Jamaica50 Entry #6 -Jamaica50 in Maturity

Jamaica has achieved so many good things amidst the hardship which confronted this small island.

It has garnered 56 Olympic medals in track and field and 89 medals at the World Championships.
It has experienced tremendous success regionally and the sports continue to enjoy popularity which includes some of the volatile communities.

Boxing has also exploded on the local scene in what many regard as a virtual rebirth of interest and activity. Hockey also is becoming more popular in Jamaica with the game being spread to many of the high schools in the country.

Jamaica50 has seen the growth of the powerful and liberated women. It was believed by some men that "Women should staying home and take care of babies" while they are regarded as leaders of home and in the society. However, there is a twist to that saying. Women are generally achieving levels of education higher than men and are seeking to empower themselves.

Strong female role models exist in every sector. Jamaica50 has seen The Most. Hon. Portia Simpson- Miller, Prime Minister of Jamaica and leader of the Peoples National Party.

Jamaica50 has seen Coke a notorious gang leader of the "Shower Posse" detained during a routine roadblock while he was attempting to surrender himself to the US.

Jamaica50 has heard the cries of some official urging Jamaicans to leave Caricom while some are saying that Jamaicans should stay in Caricom.

Jamaica50 (Jamaica at 50), is striving for excellence regardless of the economic crisis.

Happy Jamaica50th!

As a matter of fact all sectors in Jamaica are growing rapidly at the moment. We are certainly maturing.
