Ask any elder in rural Jamaica about what to give a baby with tummy trouble, or someone recovering from illness, and chances are you’ll hear this one word: arrowroot! Known for its gentle touch on the stomach and its old-time use in porridges, Jamaican Arrowroot was once a staple in homes across the island, especially in places like St. Elizabeth and Manchester where it was farmed with pride.
Even though it’s not as widely known today, this plant still holds a rightful place among Jamaica’s most trusted herbal remedies.
Jamaican Arrowroot is a starchy rhizome, similar in look to ginger or turmeric, but with its own unique texture and properties. It’s processed into a fine, white powder that’s rich in digestible starch, making it a perfect food and remedy for both young and old. Traditionally, it was one of the first foods fed to babies and a common part of the diet for persons recovering from illness or surgery.
Back in the day, arrowroot wasn’t just a cabinet (pantry) item, it was medicine. Here’s how our ancestors used it:
Modern nutritional science has confirmed that arrowroot starch is easy on the gut. It’s gluten-free, low in allergens, and contains compounds that may support immune health and digestion. Its demulcent (soothing) effect makes it particularly useful for calming inflammation in the stomach and intestines.
The most popular way to use arrowroot in Jamaica is still as a warm porridge. But even if you’re using the grounded form like the one we offer, it’s just as effective. Here’s how yuh can work it into your routine:
And yes, if yuh really want to go back to roots, some folks still mix arrowroot with cinnamon, nutmeg, or even a touch of vanilla for an old-school flavour that warms the heart and belly.
Come along with me as we dig deeper—literally—into the Jamaican Arrowroot plant. In this video, I take you to the hills where we unearth the rhizome, talk about its many benefits, and show how it’s used on the ground here in Jamaica.
