I just woke to the news that the legendary hotelier and businessman, Gordon 'Butch' Stewart died last evening.
Quite a shock I tell you!
Details of this death are not yet clear, except that it was an illness. The family reportedly will disclose the details later.
But I can tell you this; it's a huge loss not just for business interests, tourism interests, but a significant loss to Jamaica and the Caribbean.
Several top players in the industry, business, media, and politics have started to share their memories and condolences to his family.
Mr. Stewart is known mainly in the tourism industry where he virtually revolutionize hospitality in Jamaica and the Caribbean. He was the first to introduce the all-inclusive concept in the Caribbean, via the Sandals brand!
But his business ventures started way before in sales from which he started his own business, Appliance Traders Ltd in 1968, which imported and sold air-conditioning units and other appliances.
And in the early 1980's he explored the tourism area with the acquisition of the now Sandals Montego Bay. And the rest, they say, is history.
He opened several Sandals across the country and later in the Caribbean!
He also founded the Jamaica Observer Newspaper and was a part owner of the now defunct Air Jamaica that was sold back to the Jamaican government.
As his son reportedly said and so aptly, 'There will never be another like him'.
He was 79 years old. May his soul rest in peace.
We'll continue to update you as details come in.
Regards,
WG
