Jamaican Style Rice Porridge Recipe

Jamaican Style Rice Porridge Recipe || Jamaican Recipe Contest Entry #9


  • Overnight White Rice (as Jamaicans say) or rice cooked the same day put left to cool
  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Spices- Cinnamon leaves, nutmeg, vanilla
  • Milk of choice
  • White Flour


  1. In a pot containing 2-3 cups of water and half teaspoon of salt (maybe vary depending on the amount of rice) add the rice. On low flames

  2. Place a teaspoon of vanilla and 3 cinnamon leaves. Cinnamon leaves can be placed in water before adding rice as well.

  3. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  4. Sieve 1 cup of flour on a separate dish and add 1 cup of water. Stir and strain into pot containing the rice.

  5. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking

  6. Allow to boil for 15-20.

  7. Sweeten Porridge with desired milk and sugar. Grate nutmeg on porridge

  8. Enjoy with cinnamon crackers or with slices of bread.
