Jamaican music has given birth to a plethora of legendary artists who have left an indelible mark on the global music landscape. Oftentimes when we speak of legends we often get the impression that they are no longer with us. However, this is not true for many of our Jamaican music legends are still alive and many are performing today.

1. Jimmy Cliff

Jimmy Cliff, the reggae pioneer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, still graces us with his musical prowess. His soul-stirring voice and timeless hits like "Many Rivers to Cross" and "The Harder They Come" have cemented his status as a living legend.

2. Beres Hammond

Beres Hammond is renowned for his smooth and expressive voice, often called the "King of Lovers Rock." With a career spanning several decades, Hammond has delivered numerous reggae and soul-infused classics, including "Rockaway" and "No Disturb Sign," making him an iconic figure in Jamaican music.

3. Marcia Griffiths

Marcia Griffiths, the "Queen of Reggae," continues to captivate audiences with her enchanting voice and commanding stage presence. Known for her work as a member of the I-Threes, Bob Marley's backing vocalists, Griffiths' solo hits like "Electric Boogie" and "Dreamland" have solidified her place in reggae history.

The Electric Boogie in particular achieved worldwide success and is even today a very popular song at particularly at weddings and family gatherings.

4. Tarrus Riley:

Tarrus Riley has emerged as one of Jamaica's most talented contemporary reggae artists. His silky-smooth vocals and conscious lyrics resonate with listeners worldwide. Hits such as "She's Royal" and "Gimme Likkle One Drop" have earned him critical acclaim and established him as a leading voice in the genre.

His work with other talented musicians should not be left unrecognised either. The artiste often collaborates with seasoned veterans in reggae, up-and-coming Jamaican acts and international stars alike.

Some good collaborations with Riley include Simple Blessings with Konshens, Lighter with Shensea and โ€œPowerfulโ€ with Ellie Goulding.

5. Shaggy

Shaggy, born Orville Richard Burrell, is an internationally acclaimed dancehall and reggae fusion artist. With his distinctive voice and infectious hits like "It Wasn't Me" and "Boombastic," Shaggy has achieved tremendous success, selling millions of albums and collaborating with top artists across various genres.

6. Sean Paul

Sean Paul's unique dancehall, reggae, and pop blend has propelled him to global stardom. With his energetic performances and chart-topping hits like "Temperature" and "Get Busy," he has become one of the most recognizable Jamaican artists of our time.

7. Damian Marley

Son of reggae legend Bob Marley, Damian Marley has forged his path in the music industry. His fusion of reggae, dancehall, and hip-hop has earned him critical acclaim and multiple Grammy Awards. Tracks like "Welcome to Jamrock" and "Patience" showcase his lyrical prowess and social consciousness.

8. Beenie Man

Beenie Man, the self-proclaimed "King of Dancehall," has been a dominant force in the genre since the early 1990s. Known for his charismatic stage presence and energetic performances, he has delivered numerous dancehall anthems, including "Who Am I (Sim Simma)" and "Dude."

9. Maxi Priest:

Maxi Priest is a British-born Jamaican artist known for his smooth reggae, R&B, and pop blend. With his soulful voice and romantic ballads like "Close to You" and "Wild World," he has achieved international success and influenced the contemporary reggae scene.

10. Ken Boothe

Ken Boothe, often referred to as the "Blessed One," is a veteran Jamaican singer known for his soulful voice and heartfelt delivery. With his enduring hits such as "Everything I Own" and "Crying Over You," Boothe's contribution to reggae and rocksteady has made him an influential figure in Jamaican music.

11. Bunny Wailer

Bunny Wailer, born Neville Livingston, was a founding member of the iconic reggae group The Wailers, along with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. Wailer's smooth and melodic voice, coupled with his profound songwriting skills, contributed to the group's success.

Following the disbandment of The Wailers, Bunny Wailer pursued a successful solo career, winning three Grammy Awards for his albums. His contributions to Jamaican music and Rastafarian culture continue to inspire generations.

12. Burning Spear

Born Winston Rodney, he stands as one of reggae's most influential figures. With his distinctive vocals and socially conscious lyrics, Burning Spear has used his music as a powerful tool for spreading messages of empowerment and liberation. Hits like "Marcus Garvey" and "Slavery Days" showcase his ability to fuse reggae rhythms with insightful lyrics, earning him multiple Grammy Awards and a devoted fanbase.

13. Barrington Levy

Known as the "Mellow Canary," has left an indelible mark on the reggae and dancehall scene. With his unique vocal style and infectious hooks, Levy has produced an impressive catalogue of hits, including "Under Mi Sensi" and "Here I Come."

His smooth delivery and charismatic stage presence have made him a beloved figure in Jamaican music, and his influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary reggae and dancehall artists.

These legends have helped to make Jamaican music into what it is today. As they are still with us today, let us give them the recognition they deserve.
