Mayor Marie Atkins was the 3rd female mayor for Kingston & St. Andrew, Jamaica and is the longest serving mayor to date for Kingston & St. Andrew.
She is the first Jamaican to become the President of the World Conference of Mayors.
She was instrumental in establishing the Marie Atkins Night Shelter for the homeless in downtown Kingston's Hanover Street.
She established the K.S.A.C. parking lots throughout New Kingston.
She established the Marie Atkins Basic School and the Balmagie Day Care Centre from her own private means.
She was instrumental in raising funds for the Balmagie Primary School. She was the recipient of many awards and honors:
- Order of Distinction (Commander Class) for outstanding and important service to Jamaica (1992)
- The Iris King Award from the Jamerican United Nationals Association (1992)
- The Medallion of Honorary Deputy Maayor of Guadeloupe (1986)
- The Right Honourable Marcus Garvey Award and others
She is the Honorary Citizen of the following Cities:
