Whatever your reason for being in Montego Bay, the restaurants are a must-visit. However you choose to dine, I’m sure you’ll be able to find a restaurant that fits that longed-for dining experience. You might have heard of Pier 1 and the Houseboat Grill and you are stuck on which to choose. Well, let’s see if we can help you decide.

Houseboat Grill

Many of the restaurants in Montego Bay are on the waterfront or outdoors. But the Houseboat Grill provides a unique experience as it is actually in the sea. You’ll walk along a pier and when you get to the end, you will have to ring the bell for the “ferry service”.

The operator will then push the floating bridge over, secure it to ensure you have boarded safely and then take the very short trip (less than 2 minutes) over to the actual restaurant. This is a short but fun experience. You are advised to hold on to the railing and if you are travelling with children pay extra supervision to them, especially on the floating structure.

This restaurant offers indoor dining and the deck and roof are used for additional outdoor seating as well. Both areas have adequate seating and space between each table so you can feel comfortable in your personal space.

The restaurant’s menu has a good variety of dishes. Their most talked about dishes are the black bean and chilli soup, surf and turf and barbequed ribs. You will even get to choose your own lobster from the see-through case on the floor of the restaurant.

The menu is seasonal and depending on the time of year, dishes like the surf and turf are unavailable since lobster is out of season in Jamaica sometimes. Their seafood ingredients are not caught on-site since they are located in a protected marine area.

You might not want to have dinner and that’s okay. You can have a drink (or two) at the bar instead and you and your friends can catch happy hour as well.

Because the houseboat is detached, it can move a little depending on the weather, but there is nothing to worry about.

While it isn’t a vegan or vegetarian-only restaurant, they have Lacto-vegetarian or ovo-lacto vegetarian options. If you have food allergies they will try to accommodate them but due to the high seafood inputs used in their kitchen, it is hard to promise an allergen-free kitchen environment.

Pier One

pier_one_restaurantPier One

Pier One is in downtown Montego Bay and is very popular for its vibrant nightlife especially, on weekends. The waterfront restaurant offers much variety in the menu offering Jamaican and International dishes. Favourites on their menu include chicken, beef, salads, mannish water (goat soup) and oxtail.

Their restaurant is generally outdoors with the tables centred around the bar area. The dress code is semi-casual. One important point is that men are not allowed to wear sandals.

During the day, the restaurant is quiet and relaxing. But towards the evening it will get more lively. Dining closes at a certain point on certain nights to accommodate more patrons and dancing. A mixture of Dancehall, Reggae and Hip Hop is usually being played to entertain the crowd.
