Reggae fusion emerged as a genre in the late 20th century. While reggae had already captivated the hearts of millions worldwide, reggae fusion sought to expand its horizons by blending elements of reggae with various other musical genres. This fusion gave birth to a refreshing and eclectic sound that resonated with a broader audience, infusing reggae with elements of hip-hop, R&B, dancehall, jazz, and even rock.

The name is used to characterize artists like Kardinal Offishall, Sean Kingston, Chux Starr, and Heavy D who frequently move between reggae and other genres, primarily hip-hop and R&B. The word is also used to describe some of the work done by artists like Sean Paul, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Elephant Man, Shaggy, Beenie Man, Snow, Natasja Saad, Diana King, Delly Ranx, Dionne Bromfield, and Tessanne Chin who have been recognized for deejaying over music that is neither reggae nor dancehall.
