To be on a rural Jamaican farm tour is something I think everyone needs to do at least once. There is something so special about knowing where your food comes from and knowing that they are organic, healthy foods. When the McKenzie’s, Ms. Junie and Mr. Mack, invited us again after they introduced us to the Black Sapote or Chocolate Pudding fruit, we knew there was something special in-store. But, what that was, we weren’t yet sure.

Just in case you haven't seen the Black Sapote video:
Mr. Mack and his wife Ms. Junie, share this mysterious fruit they have on their farm with us! The Chocolate Pudding Fruit!
This time we were going on a Rural Jamaican Farm Tour on the McKenzie's property. The visit started with buckets of freshly picked Otaheite Apples, one of the most loved fruits on the island. It wouldn’t have been a visit to the Mackenzie’s unless we were surprised with a new and interesting fruit. Mr. Mack presented us with the Jamaican Rose Apple which I must say I was seeing for the very first time.
Many older folks like Mr. Mack and Ms. Junie remember the days when the now scarce rose apples were just as common as Otaheite Apples. That has since changed and now a Rose Apple tree is a prized possession that, naturally, the Mackenzie’s have.
But that’s not all! There were many trees potted and ready to be transported to their new homes as many persons have reached out to Mr. Mack to secure their very own Black Sapote tree as well as nutmeg, tangerine and many others.
Most of us would have to buy most of the things we eat at the market, but for a fortunate few, that is not the case. The fruitful McKenzie backyard boasts:
Not only that but there is also Callaloo. If you know anything about Jamaicans, you’ll know that this vegetable is a favourite and a mainstay in the Jamaican diet. For those who aren’t sure what Jamaican Callaloo is, it is a green leafy vegetable that is a popular breakfast dish.
It is usually served in the mornings with a hearty serving of ground provisions, yams, dasheens, boiled dumplings and the like or with fried dumplings, breadfruit and plantains and maybe two slices of bread. We also use it in other dishes too, such as Callaloo rice or steamed fish stuffed with callaloo. It comes packed with a host of health benefits too.
Individuals with anemia or pregnant women are always told to up their intake of callaloo as it is a good source of iron. But this is not all you can read more about the health benefits of callaloo and even try the very detailed recipe for Callaloo too.
There are some destinations where the journey is just as exciting as actually getting there, and the journey to the McKenzie’s farm was something. Firstly, it was a trip done on foot.
That way we're able to breathe in the good country air, see the countless other fruits available in the area and even meet a few animals on the way. We saw many more apple trees, mangoes, guavas, pineapples, cocoa beans and many other fruits at different stages of maturity.
There was a small chicken coop, we saw guinea hens and we even met two dogs, who weren’t quite friendly at first. But all this led to the crowning moment of the trip.
On their farm, Ms. Junie and Mr. Mack have a host of plants. They have:
…and I am pretty sure I missed some things. It’s a good thing we have Ms. Junie who travels to the market weekly to sell her organic products to the rest of us who don’t have our very own farm filled at every corner with fruits to eat.
A beautiful show of nature at its best, we saw a bird’s nest in a lime tree. We were careful not to disturb it though, that way the birds can have their home.
A beautiful end to the day, we were blessed with some glorious showers of rain, then the McKenzie’s sent us on our way, with gifts from their farm.
