Hi Mary — I totally get wanting to bring something fresh and healthy with you for the trip! But when it comes to raw vegetables like snow peas, Jamaica has some regulations. Because snow peas are fresh produce, you’ll be dealing with the Plant Quarantine laws.
Under Jamaica’s quarantine laws, fresh fruits and vegetables need an import permit from the Plant Quarantine/Produce Inspection Division of MICAF. You’ll also need a phytosanitary certificate from the U.S. authorities confirming those peas are clean—free of pests and disease. Without those, Jamaica customs could refuse the peas, seize them, or make you dispose of them. It’s not just about food safety—it’s about protecting local agriculture.
If you want to bring the peas, I’d suggest contacting Plant Quarantine ahead of time, explaining how much you want to bring, and seeing if they’ll issue the necessary permit. If time doesn’t allow, it might be safer to buy fresh snow peas locally in Jamaica, if available.
