"I heard that the government of Jamaica has set some guidelines in regards to building a house. The cost per square foot, including labor and materials. Can you shed some light on this as I’m not sure on the facts? Where can I find a contractor in the Portland area? As a female, I’ve been taken advantage of in that department and I’m at my wits' end on trusting anyone. Help."
Hi Annette—first off, I really feel your frustration. Trying to build here in Jamaica when you’re not here full-time is already a challenge, and when trust gets broken, it can be downright discouraging. But you're not alone, and thankfully there are practical steps you can take to move forward the right way.
As for finding a trustworthy contractor, you’re doing the right thing by asking upfront. In Portland, I suggest checking out One2 Construction Ltd. They're based in Port Antonio and have a reputation for transparency and quality work. You can reach them at one2construction.com or call +1 (876) 603-8165.
Another solid choice is Immaculate Maintenance & Construction. They work island-wide, including Portland, and are known for working with overseas clients. You can reach them via WhatsApp at +1 (876) 382-4577 or visit their website at imcsconstructions.com. They’re more open to tailoring services for women and returning residents too, which might be just what you need.
Whichever contractor you go with, make sure you have a written contract, clear scope of work, and preferably someone on island (even a trusted neighbour or local family friend) who can check in during the project. That little bit of oversight makes a world of difference.
Annette, I hope this helps bring some peace of mind and points you in the right direction. Building your home here in Jamaica should be an exciting journey—and with the right team, it can be. Blessings on your project!
