Hi Richard, thank you for reaching out—and welcome home in advance! The great news is that since you were born in Jamaica, you're automatically considered a Jamaican citizen by birth, even though you’re now also a U.S. citizen. That means you have a right to return and reside in Jamaica without any immigration restrictions.
To settle back comfortably and re-establish your life here, here’s what I’d recommend:
1. Jamaican Passport: If you don’t already have a Jamaican passport, the first step would be to apply for one. Your original Jamaican birth certificate is key here, along with two passport-sized photos, a completed passport application form (available on PICA’s website), and your valid US passport for identity confirmation. PICA stands for the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency, and they’re the ones who handle these matters in Jamaica.
2. TRN (Tax Registration Number): You’ll also want to apply for a TRN if you don’t have one already. This number is needed for opening bank accounts, buying land or property, and even applying for utilities. You can apply for it while abroad through a Jamaican Tax Office or via a representative here in Jamaica.
3. NIS or NHT Records: If you had any work history here before migrating, it’s wise to check if there are any benefits or records still under your name. You can visit NHT or MLSS for more on this.
4. Returning Resident Support (Optional): Although you are a citizen, you can also explore the Returning Resident programme, especially if you plan to ship back household items or a vehicle duty-free. You’ll need to show proof of time spent abroad and intent to resettle. This is usually handled by the Jamaica Customs Agency.
Once you’re back, you can easily reintegrate with full rights as a Jamaican citizen, including voting, owning property, and accessing public services. Good luck!
