Where to Find Scotch Bonnet and Other Jamaican Ingredients in New York

Where to buy Jamaican ingredients in New York

Question from Ariel, Hempstead, NY:

Is it possible to get all the ingredients from CTOWN supermarket or Latin grocery store? Scotch bonnet peppers are not really sold in American markets.

Ariel, I feel your pain! Finding authentic Jamaican ingredients in the U.S.—especially that fiery scotch bonnet—isn’t always as easy as we’d like, but it’s not impossible. Let’s break it down based on your location in Hempstead, NY (which is actually a pretty decent area for Caribbean shopping).

CTown supermarkets do carry a surprising range of international goods, and depending on the branch, you might find scotch bonnet peppers, especially the yellow variety. But more often than not, they carry the red habanero, which is similar in heat but different in flavour. You might have to substitute in a pinch—but it's worth asking a store manager if they ever get fresh scotch bonnets or if you can request it.

Latin grocery stores are also a great option for fresh herbs, seasonings, and tropical produce. While they usually stock peppers like ají and habanero, you might occasionally spot a scotch bonnet or two—especially in areas with a strong Caribbean or West Indian population.

Now if you want the full spread, pimento (allspice), scallion, thyme, breadfruit, bammy, and green bananas —your best bet might actually be a dedicated Caribbean grocery store. There are a few in Queens and Brooklyn that regularly import Jamaican produce. Even online Caribbean markets are stepping up these days!

If you’re just missing the scotch bonnet, a little hack is to check out frozen or bottled versions in the international aisle, or look for Caribbean brands like Grace and Walkerswood that offer authentic seasonings with the right kick.
