Hi Lisa, I love that you asked this question, our national heroes are such a huge part of Jamaica’s story, they represent the heart and soul of the island’s fight for freedom and justice.
You already know Marcus Garvey, one of the most famous, but Jamaica officially honours seven national heroes, each playing a powerful role in shaping the country we know today.
It all started with the struggles for liberation—from slavery, from colonial rule, and for the rights of everyday Jamaicans. Our heroes are remembered for their courage, their vision, and their sacrifices to uplift the people, often in the face of brutal opposition.
Nanny of the Maroons is one of the most legendary—she was a fearless warrior queen who led the Maroons in guerrilla battles against the British in the mountains of Jamaica. Her tactics and leadership are still taught today, and she remains the only female national hero.
Sam Sharpe was a Baptist deacon and leader of the 1831 Christmas Rebellion, which played a major role in pushing toward the end of slavery in Jamaica. He paid with his life, but his bravery sparked major change.
Then there’s Paul Bogle and George William Gordon, both connected to the Morant Bay Rebellion of 1865. Bogle led the march for justice, while Gordon, a politician, advocated for the rights of the poor—both became martyrs for the cause.
Of course, Marcus Garvey, whom you know, stands as a global figure for Black empowerment, unity, and self-reliance. His vision still echoes across the world.
Norman Manley and Sir Alexander Bustamante were political giants who paved the way for modern Jamaica, with Bustamante becoming the country’s first Prime Minister after independence.
In short, our heroes tell the story of rebellion, leadership, and hope. Their lives are a reminder that Jamaica’s freedom wasn’t handed over easily—it was earned, step by step, by brave men and women who refused to back down.
If you ever visit Jamaica, I recommend seeing the National Heroes Park in Kingston, it’s where these icons are honoured. Of course, if you are on the Mobay side, please stop by Sam Sharpe Square and see the man himself!
