Outfits such as The Montego Bay Yacht Club hosts an annual fishing tournament known as the Jamaica International Blue Marlin Team Tournament. There is also the Annual Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament at the Errol Flynn Marina, Port Antonio, Portland. Falmouth Blue Marlin Tournament (Falmouth, Trelawny) is the new kid on the block.
The first two tournaments combine to account for some of the largest blue marlin caught in the Caribbean. Tournaments are held between September and October each year. Invitations are issued to anglers around the world who jump at the chance to participate in the catch and release tournament for the game fish, the Atlantic Blue Marlin, which haply migrates to our warm waters here in the Caribbean from September and October.
What kind of fish will I catch?
The waters of the Caribbean flourish with several types of fish and trust me you are not limited to the blue marlin. You will find:
- White marlin
- Snailfish
- Mahi Mahi
- Wahoo
- Barracuda
- Red snapper (a personal favourite)
- Grouper
- Bonita
- Shark
- Green jack
- Jackfish
- Yellow jack
- Kingfish
- Tarpon
- Striped tuna
- Blackfin tuna and
- Yellowfin tuna
- Sports Fishing
A lot of sportsmen around the world are attracted to the Caribbean for its sport fishing opportunities. While some of the fish are caught and landed, many are released. Still, you’ll have many opportunities to get caught on camera with one of the large saltwater finds you have hauled in. The ultimate being of course to hook a blue marlin to tag and release. A rewarding and taxing effort that could take hours to catch and land.
Where can I go to do Deep Sea Fishing in Jamaica?
The good news is that you can charter fully equipped deep sea fishing boats from most resorts here. Our east, north and West coasts are good spots all year long but remember it is on the north coast where the tournaments are held. But here are a few specific suggestions about where you can go:

- Treasure Beach
- Falmouth
- Boscobel Beach
- Lucea
How long does a typical Deep Sea fishing trip last?
You’ll be enjoying your fishing adventure for either a half-day or a full day.
Booking Your Fishing Escape
The booking costs vary based on the size of your boat, the length of the trip, the add-ons needed and the size of your crew. It is a given that the more indulgence you require the more expensive it will be. Some boats, for example, offer an air-conditioned bedroom. Snacks, drinks and such will add to your expenses.
Based on the costs I’ve seen, the half-day deep sea fishing trip would cost a minimum of USD550 a full day costs USD900 each for a party of 4 persons.
