Nine Miles, you should probably already know, is the birth place of our late great, reggae superstar, Bob Marley and is also his final resting place.
About 60 miles from Montego Bay, or 1.5 hours driving, it is located just outside of Brown's Town, in the heart of the parish of St. Ann- not far from the Ocho Rios area.
The trip takes you through various villages where you can learn quite a lot about rural Jamaica- the real Jamaica.
Typically, you are greeted by a Rastaman who opens the gate just enough for the driver to enter the compound and then locks it. They will also not hesitate to let you know that the laws are different inside behind those walls. You will notice that ganja is grown (& smoke) everywhere.
The guide takes you through the black gates, up a steep but beautifully paved walkway and up to Bob's childhood home and his resting place. By the way, the guides will also ensure you learn a lot about the Rastafarian religion.
Here are some intriguing pictures of Nine Miles. Learn and enjoy!

Editor's Notes:
Question from Jill (USA) on December 16, 2011
I am looking for confirmation that marijuana is legal at Nine miles Jamaica or within the walls of the Marley Mausoleum. I can find a lot of comments on it but not the law.
I want to take students there but can't if it is illegal. Any help to find documentation on this would be appreciated.
Answer by Editor:
Hi Jill,
Thanks for the question.
Sorry to disappoint you but no my friend, Marijuana is not legal at nine miles as it is across the rest of Jamaica.
Although it might be used extensively there, there managers will tell you that it is used at one's own risk, buying or selling. Read more on Ganja (weed) here
All in all, it is a great cultural experience though! Enjoy.
