How Do You Get Around In Ocho Rios?

Getting around Ocho Rios is really easy. There are taxis at every turn and should you prefer it, taxi or charter services as well. If you are confident and able, rentals are available as well.

Public Taxis

If you plan on staying in Ocho Rios, especially downtown, then there is no reason to worry about getting from point A to B. Taxis are readily available to take you everywhere. In most cases, these taxis will have other passengers as well. But it is a cheaper alternative for the 5 to 10 minutes you will actually be in the vehicle.

Taxi/Charter Services

A taxi or charter service might be a better option for you. You might not be comfortable travelling around in a place you don’t know or, you would just prefer it for convenience. Whatever your reason, taxi and charter services will do pick up and drop-offs from hotels, attractions and other spots in and around Ocho Rios.

In most cases, this is all the taxi services will do, but, charters will wait if you need them to which makes them better for excursions that are not in the main town of Ocho Rios, for example, Nine Mile.

Charters are also a better option for out-of-parish activities, such as a trip from Ocho Rios to Montego Bay or Negril.

If you happen to go shopping, there will be plenty of taxis in the area so there is no need to worry about getting back to the hotel with your new purchases. Most of the shopping is in the centre of the town anyway.

The hotels should be able to give you a list of taxis or even call a taxi for you.

JUTA Tours and Maxi Tours are the two largest taxi/charter services in Jamaica and they work mostly with visitors. There are no standard rates as each provider will have their rate.

For the taxis you catch around the town, however, there is a standard rate. These taxi services and others like it will charge by car and not by the number of passengers, but regular route taxis will charge by the number of persons travelling.

Buses run from Ocho Rios to other major towns such as Montego Bay or Falmouth but there is no bus system within the town of Ocho Rios.

  • Maxi Tours +1 876 974-2971)

Rental Companies

The only reason to rent a car is if you plan to do plenty of trips outside of Ocho Rios, other than that it really is a waste of money. But should you need a rental for those excursions and trips to Negril, Portland or wherever you wish, then there are car rental companies in Ocho Rios which rent vehicles at competitive prices.

Here are some rental options in Ocho Rios.

Can you walk around Ocho Rios?

Yes, you can. You won’t be able to walk everywhere due to distance, but, if you are in Downtown Ocho Rios everything is nearby and it is fairly easy to hop from one place to the next. But, in terms of safety, Ocho Rios is one of the safer towns in Jamaica. And so, you should be okay. Just be cautious as you would be in any other new place you visit.

How do you get around Jamaica without a car?

The taxi and bus services work excellently in towns and cities, so you can get around without any hassle on the public route system. You won’t need to rent a car unless you would love to experience driving in Jamaica or you plan to do lots of out-of-parish activities.

What food is Ocho Rios known for?

As a fishing village, Ocho Rios is most well known for exceptional seafood. Many Jamaican restaurants offer great representations of local staples. The international cuisine offerings are quite good in Ocho Rios as well.

Here are some suggestions.

Which is nicer Montego Bay or Ocho Rios?

I wouldn’t say one is nicer than the other, it just depends on what you’d want to do on vacation. Montego Bay is a little more suited for persons looking for luxury resort stays, golfing, long days at the beach and visiting historical sites.

It is also a good central point between Negril and Ocho Rios if you are hoping to visit all three places while on vacation. If staying close to the hotel is also important to you, you will be more satisfied with Montego Bay.

Ocho Rios is an adventurer’s paradise with adventure parks, gardens, beaches, and every turn. Most of Jamaica’s top attractions are located in Ocho Rios and the attractions here have more variety as well. If you are on a cruise, it will most likely dock in Ocho Rios.

How long is the bus ride from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios?

The bus will take approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios.

There is no need to worry about travelling around Ocho Rios. Just relax and have fun!
