How does a “bush” used as toilet paper in the past go from that to a highly sought-after herb? Let's take a closer look at the Jamaican burdock plant, also known as the velvet plant, and uncover its many uses and health benefits that make it a standout in rural Jamaica.

As Jamaicans, we make use of what is available to us. Yes, things and times have changed, but there was a time when we would use weeds to sweep our homes, coconut shells to shine our floors and Burdock leaves to wash dishes and to substitute toilet paper (maybe because the leaves are big and soft?)

What's awesome about the Burdock plant though, is that it is way more useful than just for domestic purposes. We can consume it and it has a host of incredible benefits that we were sleeping on, completely unaware of.

Whether it's the leaves or the roots, the velvet plant can make a mean cup of tea. Boiling these components creates a detoxifying elixir that targets the blood and lymphatic system. It's like a natural cleanse, flushing out toxins and leaving you with a rejuvenated and fresh feeling. The fact that it supports the liver is a bonus! Here are some of its health benefits.

Benefits of Jamaican Burduck

Anti-Inflammatory:
The velvet plant has a wide variety of health benefits. It packs anti-inflammatory properties, making it a go-to remedy for soothing aches and pains. Whether it's joint discomfort or general inflammation, this plant has got your back. A big deal, since inflammation is the root of the majority of health concerns.

Glowing Skin:
The Burduck or velvet plant is great for the skin too. It soothes the skin, tackling issues like acne and eczema.

Digestive Health:
If you're into gut health, you'll appreciate that it's rich in fibre, promoting a healthy digestive system. It's like a holistic approach to well-being!

Immune Boost and Blood Sugar Regulation:
Are you boosting your immune system? Check. Regulating blood sugar levels? Double-check. The velvet plant isn't just a well-thought-after herb for nothing; it's a health one of those plants that is sure to improve your health. With its immune-boosting properties, it becomes a natural shield against common ailments. And for those mindful of blood sugar levels, incorporating this plant into your routine might just do the trick.

Weight Management and Potential Cancer Fighter:
Are you looking to manage your weight? The velvet plant provides a sense of fullness, making it a helpful companion on your wellness journey. And here's something intriguing – ongoing research suggests that it may have cancer-fighting properties. While it's not a cure, it's exciting to think about the potential health benefits this plant could offer.

How to make Burdock Root Tea

Burdock root can be purchased as loose chopped root or as tea bags. The tea bags are quite easy to make; to get maximum efficacy, just let them steep in boiling water for at least five minutes. Then taste and add honey.

Although the premade tea bags are quite practical, the best advantages come from the strong loose root.

One ounce of loosely chopped burdock root should be boiled in a gallon of water for ten minutes to produce this tea. After that, let it steep for an hour. After that, pour the contents into a glass bottle and refrigerate; drink one cup daily. While the tea is still hot, sweeten it with honey and lemon or ginger for a more refreshing taste.

Potential Side Effects of Jamaican Burduck

Studies on Burdock Root's effects on children have not been done, although it is thought to be safe for adults.

  1. Because burdock root resembles the toxic nightshade plant, it is best to get it from reliable vendors rather than gathering it in the wild.
  2. Burdock root reduces fluid retention because it is a diuretic; avoid using this plant if you are dehydrated.
  3. Burdock root should not be consumed by expectant or nursing mothers.
  4. Since burdock root and daisies are members of the same plant family, you may also be allergic to them.

Adding Burdock to your diet and lifestyle opens up possibilities. A short while ago Wellesley interviewed his good friend, Miss Pat. Miss Pat has been studying herbs for a while now and has become quite knowledgeable about herbs and their benefits.

The burdock plant is one of the herbs she uses to create remedies for several health issues and she shared some impressive testimonials with us.
