Sometimes, finding scholarships and grants, especially in the area of arts and sports may seem close to impossible. Companies like National Commercial Bank (NCB), Burger King offers several scholarships annually and most universities have several scholarship options. Here are some Jamaican sports scholarships.

The University of the West Indies

The Faculty of Sports at UWI offers over 2 dozen scholarships annually. Two of the most well-sought-after options are:

Mona Campus Sport Scholarship

The University of the West Indies at Mona awards qualifying athletes scholarships for tuition and/or housing as part of the Sports Unit's plan to create teams capable of excelling in both national and international contests. A meal plan is beneficial for athletes in addition to a comprehensive training schedule because it will help them better manage their nutritional needs.

Eleven football players and eight track and field athletes received the first three million dollar scholarships for the 2008–2009 school year. Nine of those athletes were freshmen chosen after a stringent selection procedure that included working with coaches from several high schools. This was done to make sure that the student-athletes have both a love of athletics and academic prowess.

To receive a scholarship, the student-athlete must:

  1. Be able to meet the university’s matriculation requirements.
  2. Display good conduct and deportment, and be in good academic standing.
  3. Have demonstrated significant sporting potential or have competed in national or international competitions.
  4. Be able to meet the athletic qualification standards set by the university.

Dr Tulsi Dyal Singh Scholarship in Sport

Undergraduates enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Sport and in the second or last year of their degree program are eligible for the award. The scholarship is offered to one student each academic year and is valued at USD 3000.

The award is based on:

  1. high academic performance based on the results of the previous year's University examinations;
  2. verifiable financial need;
  3. involvement in co-curricular/community activities;
  4. leadership qualities etc.

The scholarship is available to athletes competing in Olympic sports. Each of the four (4) candidates—two (2) men and two (2) women—will receive a total of J$500,000 every academic year, up to a maximum of three (3) years, for the chosen program.

All applicants for the JOA Scholarship must meet the following criteria:
