Hello Wellesley,

I am new to your website, but my congratulations to you for creating this forum.

I have a lot to catch up on. However, as an old soldier, I would enjoy seeing some information on Jamaica's military history beginning with the capture of Jamaica by the British from Spain down to the present time.

Hopefully, this topic would be of some interest to some of your other readers.

Regards,
Dennis Fletcher (JDF 12558 - 1962-68)

Wellesley's Note

Interesting, very interesting soldier!

Your question definitely got me thinking... and above that I started to do some reading myself!

I found information in the following categories on a resource that I think you'll love. It includes...

  • List of regiments that served in Jamaica from 1702 to 1962
  • Jamaica's involvement in World Wars 1 and 2, courtesy of the London Gazette
  • Information on the children at the Royal Military Academy Chelsea, who were sponsored by the West India Regiment, and whose fathers had served in the Regiment.
  • Monumental Inscriptions on monuments and tombstones for soldiers buried at Up Park Camp and in Newcastle and other locations.
  • Registers - from Baptismal, Marriage and Burial records in Jamaica.
  • Excerpts from autobiography of soldiers stationed in Jamaica, and a whole lot more.

Click This Link to hop over and view the information on the Jamaican Family Search Genealogy Research Library.

You'll notice that they have links to all the data, and above that, a handy search box! Go ahead and try that. I hope it helps in the interim.
