"My partner has a misspelling on his Jamaican National ID card that we only noticed when filling out the passport application. Where do we go to get this changed and how long does it take? He’s in Jamaica, and I’m in London."
Hi Lisa, good morning! That’s a very important detail to catch before passport application. The process to correct a name error on a Jamaican National ID (NIDS card) involves visiting your local Electoral Constituency Office in Jamaica—the same office where the ID was originally issued. They handle minor errors like spelling mistakes that don’t change pronunciation.
Your partner should bring his original and a copy of his birth certificate, and wear a dark-colored shirt for a new photo. They’ll re-take fingerprints and photo, and issue an updated card. If the spelling error is considered “major” (changes pronunciation), a sworn declaration will also be required—signed by someone older like a relative, and endorsed by a Justice of the Peace or Minister of Religion. The staff at the office will let you know if this is needed.
Once submitted, a minor correction typically takes about 2 months. If it’s a major change involving a declaration, it can take up to 6 months
If you’re abroad, contact your nearest Jamaican Embassy or High Commission (in London) to see if the process can be facilitated remotely or via proxy—especially for document certification. In most cases, it’s easier for him to do it directly in Jamaica.
