I've been to Dunn's River Falls several times over the years, usually as part of trips with family and friends, and I can tell you that there's much more to a good waterfall day in Jamaica than simply getting wet.

Of course, climbing those famous rocks at Dunn's River is a big part of the fun. But I've always enjoyed the beach side too. Add the swimming, the laughter and those inevitable “hold on, let me get a picture!” moments, and before you know it, you've made a whole day of it. And Dunn's River isn't my only experience. I've also visited Somerset Falls in its heyday, as well as YS Falls and Mayfield Falls.

One thing I've learned from visiting different waterfalls around Jamaica is that they're not all the same. Some falls can be surprisingly powerful, some involve walking over wet and slippery surfaces, and others offer pools, beautiful grounds and additional activities that you'll want to enjoy while you're there.

That's why packing for a waterfall day deserves a little more thought than simply throwing a swimsuit and towel into a bag.

So what should you bring? Let's pack the bag 🤗

My Waterfall Day Packing Checklist

Here's a simple checklist that should cover most Jamaican waterfall adventures:

  1. Swimsuit – Wear it under your clothes if you want to save time when you arrive.
And by the way, that includes us males, put on that shorts from back home or the hotel.
  2. Water shoes with good grip – Probably one of the most important items, especially if you'll be walking or climbing on wet rocks.
  3. Towel – A lightweight, quick-drying one is especially convenient.
  4. Change of clothes – Including dry underwear. You'll appreciate this on the ride home!
  5. Waterproof phone pouch – Protects your phone while still allowing you to capture those memorable pictures.
  6. Small waterproof or dry bag – Useful for keys, money and other things you really don't want getting soaked.
  7. Drinking water – You'll still need to stay hydrated even though you're surrounded by water.
  8. Sunscreen – Don't let the cool water fool you; you're still under the Jamaican sun.
  9. Insect repellent – Particularly useful at lush, heavily vegetated locations.
  10. A little cash or a card – For entrance fees, food, lockers, souvenirs or other activities where available.
  11. Snacks – Especially when travelling with children or visiting somewhere with limited food options, and...
  12. Camera or phone – Because believe me, you're going to want pictures!

That's the basic bag packed.

But a few of those items deserve a little more explanation.

Please, Wear Proper Water Shoes

If you're planning to climb a waterfall, your footwear matters. Wet rocks can be extremely slippery, and I've been to waterfalls, like Mayfields, where the force of the water itself is surprisingly strong.

Dunn's River Falls recommends water shoes for the climb, and I'd make them a priority at any waterfall where you're going to be walking through water or over rocks. Look for something that fits securely and gives you good traction. Regular flip-flops might be fine for walking around the beach or changing area, but they're not what I'd choose for climbing wet rocks.

And please, don't let those beautiful photographs fool you, a waterfall can look gentle from a distance and feel very different when you're standing underneath it!

Keep the Phone Safe - But Take the Pictures!

This one is important to me because some of the fun of these trips is looking back at the pictures afterwards. In fact, the one up top with me and Nylah is now one of my favourite pics!

At Dunn's River, for example, there are some wonderful opportunities for pictures - not just while enjoying the falls but around the beach and grounds as well.  So yes, take your phone, just protect it. A good waterproof phone pouch with a secure neck or wrist strap is worth having. I'd also recommend that you keep car keys, money and anything else that can't afford to get wet inside a proper waterproof bag. And when you're taking pictures around the falls, choose a safe spot first.

Pack for More Than the Waterfall

This is something that's easy to overlook. Some of my best waterfall experiences haven't been only about standing beneath the falls.

At Dunn's River, for example, I look forward to enjoying the beach at the base. At other attractions, like YS Falls, you may find swimming pools, picnic areas, gardens or other activities.

If you're going with family and friends, you might spend several hours there. So bring what will make the rest of the day comfortable - a change of clothes, something to drink, perhaps a snack and whatever your children may need.

And don't schedule things so tightly that you're watching the clock all day (I've learned some lessons here),  give yourself a chance to enjoy the place.

Remember: Jamaican Waterfalls Are Not All the Same

Dunn's River, YS Falls, Reggae Falls, NonSuch Falls, Cane River Falls, Benta Falls, Mayfield Falls and Somerset Falls - for example, all offer a different experience.

Some of the more established ones have changing facilities, food, guides and other amenities but the more rustic locations may offer far less.

Also, the water conditions can change dramatically. Heavy rainfall can increase the volume and force of a river or waterfall considerably, so pay attention to local instructions and don't assume that because you saw someone standing in a particular spot in a photograph, it's safe to stand there today. If guides or lifeguards tell you not to enter an area, listen to them.

I've experienced some very strong waterfalls here in Jamaica. They're beautiful, but we should never underestimate the power of moving water.

What Should You Leave Behind?

You don't need to carry your whole hotel room with you, lol. I'd leave expensive jewellery and unnecessary valuables somewhere secure. I also wouldn't bring a large bag filled with things I'll spend the entire day worrying about. So my recommendation, keep it simple.

Swim. Explore. Take pictures. Eat. Laugh. Enjoy your people. Afterall, that's what the day is supposed to be about.

Make It a Day to Remember

For me, that's really the best part of visiting Jamaica's waterfalls.

Yes, the waterfalls themselves can be spectacular. Climbing Dunn's River is an experience or standing beneath rushing waters certainly wakes you up!

But years later, what often stays with you are the other things too - the family members who were there, the jokes, the pictures, the swimming and everything else that happened around the main attraction.

So when you're packing for a waterfall day in Jamaica, prepare for more than getting wet, pack so that you're comfortable, pack so that you're safe. And then go with people whose company you actually enjoy- never the grumpy ones!

Because a Jamaican waterfall is beautiful on its own, but a great day there with family and good buddies is even better!

Regards,
Wellesley
