Do You Need A Car In Montego Bay?
Whether or not you need a car in Montego Bay is dependent on what your intentions are. Meaning, what do you plan to do in Montego Bay? If you are a tourist staying at a resort on the hip strip and only intend to visit places within that vicinity, renting a car won’t be necessary. However, whether you are a tourist or not and you intend to travel around Montego Bay, St. James or Jamaica at large renting a car would be ideal.
Can Tourists Rent A Car In Montego Bay, Jamaica?
Yes. Tourists are permitted to rent vehicles in Montego Bay or anywhere is Jamaica for that matter. Just as long as they have a valid driver's licence. While Jamaican laws do not require international travellers to get a local driver’s permit, they are required to have one from their country and they have a limited amount of time that they are allowed to do so. Persons from Japan can use their license for 1 month, those from North America can use theirs for 3 months while residents of the United Kingdom get 12 months.
After this, you will have to apply for your Jamaican driver's licence.
How Old Do You Have To Be To Rent A Car In Jamaica?
To rent a car in Jamaica as a tourist you need to be at least 21 years old and have a valid drivers license.
With Montego Bay being such a busy city, welcoming visitors from all over the world frequently, many businessmen have taken the opportunity to invest in car rental companies. Here are just a few of the car rental companies located in Montego Bay, with some pretty good ratings on google, that you may consider doing business with:
1. Apex Car Rentals Ltd.
Located at shop 14 St. James place plaza on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard (the Hip Strip) Montego Bay, Apex Car Rentals is only a few minutes away from the airport. They have providing both locals and tourist with the option to rent a car in Montego Bay since December 1989.
The options they have will fit any kind of adventure you would like to go on as they have a wide range of vehicles such as SUVs and minivans. Once requested they help to provide travel itineraries for those here on vacation. They also provide phone and car seat rentals on customers request.
They offer free pick up and delivery of vehicles in and around Montego bay, including the airport. They have a minimum 3-day policy for rentals and customers are fully liable for any damage done to the vehicle when with them. The possible cost of damage and repair owed may be reduced if a customer purchases a Collision Damage Waiver at $12 additional per day.
2. OJs Auto Sales and Rentals
They are a family-owned and operated company that aims to provide first-class car rental services. They are located only a minutes drive from the Sangster's International Airport and offers to pick up and deliver island-wide! If you don't feel like driving, they also provide additional services such as chauffeur services, airport pickups, cruise ship pickups and more. You will find an impressive selection of vehicles to choose from on their website.
3. Classique Car Rental
This is a Florida based company with 90 car rental locations, 10 of which are scattered across the Caribbean. The location of their Jamaican office is 23 Delisser Dr. Montego Bay. While they do have a variety of vehicles, the vehicles available to you will be dependent on the time and date you select when reserving with them online.
4. Enterprise Rent-A-Car
This is another American company with over 9500 locations in 100 countries. While the company has been able to grow internationally they have remained completely family owned over the years. They have a location on Queens Drive Montego and offer rentals of cars, SUVs and vans. They offer pick-ups and delivery at various locations across the island.
5. Driv Us Ja Car Rentals
This car rental company has a location at the Sangster's International Airport and another on Sunset Boulevard, Montego Bay. Their main focus is to always provide reliable vehicles and superb customer service. If you should ever run into some car trouble you won’t need to worry as they provide 24/7 roadside assistance.
These are just a few of the many companies to rent a car in Montego Bay that you can choose from. Remember to always ask as many questions as you need and select a vehicle that will suit your needs. As a matter of fact, I will leave you with a few tips on driving in Jamaica.
