Herbert Henry McKenley was born on July 10, 1922, in the small town of Pleasant Valley, Jamaica. He enrolled at the University of Illinois, where in 1946 and 1947 he won the 220 yd (200 m) and 440 yd (400 m) NCAA championships.
In 1945, 1947, and 1948, he won the AAU championship in the 440-yard dash. In 1947, he also set the world records for the 100 m (10.3), 200 m (20.4), and 400 m (46.2). The feat has only ever been accomplished by him. This was
McKenley broke the 440 yds (400 m) world record in 46.0 just before the 1948 London Olympics, and he did it again a month later in 45.9. McKenley came in fourth in the 200 m and only second in the 400 m in the Olympics, behind colleague Arthur Wint. When Wint strained a muscle during the 4 x 400 m relay final, he possibly lost a gold medal. He is the first sprinter to have qualified for the Olympic final in each of the three sprinting events—the 100 m, 200 m, and 400 m.
On August 23, 1947, McKenley raced 440 yards in 45.0 seconds on a wind-assisted straight boardwalk in Long Branch, New Jersey, making him the first person to run 400 meters in under 45 seconds.
McKenley, the only athlete to ever accomplish this feat, finished third in the 100 m, 200 m, and 400 m events at the inaugural Pan-American Games in Buenos Aires in 1951.
McKenley finished second in the 100 m and 400 m in the Helsinki Olympics. When he helped the Jamaican 4 x 400 m relay team win the competition with a new world record of 3.03.9, he finally earned his Olympic gold.
