How to recover my Jamaican nis number

Teejay, mi boss, good news — you don’t need to fly to Jamaica just to retrieve your NIS number. You can request it right from where you are in Connecticut. The process is handled through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MLSS) in Jamaica.

Here’s what you’ll need to do:

You’ll be required to send an email to the Ministry’s NIS department explaining that you need to retrieve your NIS number. Include as much identifying information as possible: your full name, date of birth, mother’s maiden name, your TRN (if you have it), and ideally a copy of your ID (Jamaican passport, birth certificate, or driver’s licence). This helps them search their records faster.

The email address to send your request to is: info@mlss.gov.jm. If you prefer, you can also call them at 1 (876) 922-8000 or WhatsApp them at 876-511-9655. It may take a few days, but they’ll typically respond and confirm your number or guide you if further verification is needed.

Just make sure to write clearly, and attach your ID as a scanned PDF or clear photo. They’re quite responsive, especially when you mention that you’re overseas and unable to travel at this time.

Once you recover your NIS number, I suggest storing it safely, either digitally or in a personal file. You never know when you might need it again — especially if you’re planning to claim benefits or verify past contributions.
