Its intricacy gives beverages a distinctive personality and serves as the secret ingredient in many rum-based signature drinks and a key component of real Jamaican rum punch.

Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum are more than simply a beverage in Jamaica, it is a part of the island's culture and permeates daily rituals and social interactions.

About J. Wray and Nephew Ltd

A significant player in the global branded beverage market, the Campari Group's J. Wray & Nephew Limited business has a portfolio of more than 50 premium and ultra-premium brands that are sold and distributed in more than 190 nations.

The oldest business in Jamaica and one of the biggest exporters in the Caribbean, J. Wray & Nephew Limited was founded in 1825. Its goods are exported to more than 60 nations worldwide. With a variety of owned and represented brands, including the renowned Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum and Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum, the Company boasts Jamaica's largest wine and spirits portfolio.

The primary activities of J. Wray & Nephew Limited include the production of wines and other alcoholic beverages, the distillation of rum and other spirits, the ageing, blending, and bottling of rum, as well as the marketing, sales, and distribution of the Company's brands and all other non-owned brands that the Company represents in Jamaica.

A Little History On J. Wray and Nephew

When John Wray founded his rum business in Kingston in 1825, the city was a thriving seaport and the country's commercial hub. One of the most upscale theatres in the New World, the Theatre Royal, was located in Kingston. John Wray built the Shakespeare Tavern next to the Theatre Royal. It immediately gained popularity since Wray was known for experimenting with the combining of rums, liqueurs, and spirits to create alcoholic concoctions that were well-liked by his customers.

Charles James Ward, a young and talented entrepreneur who was 22 years old, joined John Wray's company in 1860. After two years, he made Ward a partner in the business that would become J. Wray & Nephew. Wray resigned in 1864 and passed away in 1867, leaving Ward as the only owner of the company. Ward turned his family's tavern and liquor business into one of Jamaica's top businesses. When Ward passed away, trustees were appointed to manage his estate. In 1916, the trustees sold the estate to Lindo Brothers & Co. Ltd, who subsequently acquired the Appleton Plantation, a rum-producing estate that had been around since 1749. Since that time, J. Wray & Nephew has recently undergone several ownership transitions with the Campari Group.

How strong is Wray and Nephew Overproof Rum?

Wray and Nephew contain %63 or 126 proof alcohol. That is significantly more alcohol than the 40% mark at which many other rums are bottled.

How do Jamaicans drink Wray and Nephew?

Jamaicans love rum! And one of their favourites is the Wray and Nephew Overproof rum and they have found so many different ways to consume it. Here are three of the more โ€œold schoolโ€ ways to try Jamaican rum.

  • Steel Bottom (Rum And Beer)- The older demographic prefers this beverage. It consists of Red Stripe beer mixed with white rum. Pour some Wray and Nephew white overproof rum into a cup, then slowly pour in your beer to make this. When you're done, you should be able to see the rum and beer separating. Sip it carefully at first, then drink the rest of it.
  • Rum And Water- Isn't it strange to enter a bar and ask for a drink of rum and water? In this case, though, it isn't; it is a favourite among older males here in Jamaica. It's a straightforward mixture of white rum and some tap water (never add ice), and in certain rural areas, it's known as "firewater."
  • Rum And Lasco (Or any milk)- Locals adore this delicious treat because it combines two of our favourites, rum and Lasco. If you are unaware, there is a local firm called Lasco that produces a variety of goods, but their Lasco Food Drink Mix, which is essentially powdered milk and comes in a variety of flavours, the most popular of which is the vanilla flavour, is used by everyone.

But remember the Wray and Nephew white overproof rum is not just for drinking, it is also used for a variety of medicinal purposes. Here are three of the most popular ways:

Medicinal Uses For Wray and Nephew

  1. It is also traditionally used on the body when someone is ill and running at high temperatures in Jamaica and other Caribbean nations. It is utilised like rubbing alcohol.

  2. In Jamaica, a scorpion is placed in a bottle of rum and allowed to soak for a while. The resulting concoction is then used to "sap" sore spots on the body.

  3. In a crisis, white rum can be used as an antiseptic. It can be used to disinfect wounds and prevent bacterial growth. In Jamaica, forty legs are placed in a glass bottle with overproof white rum and stored for about 6 weeks before use. It is used to combat the side effects of a forty-leg bite.
