QUESTION:

Where can I find best boarding schools in Jamaica or private school?

ANSWER: by Wellesley February 08, 2011

Hello Maureen,

I did some legwork for you :-)

I checked with the ministry of education and they advised that the boarding schools now in Jamaica are:

Knox College (Spauldings, Clarendon) - 876-987-8015
Hampton; for Girls (St. Elizabeth) 876-966-5115
Munroe; for Boys (St. Elizabeth) 876-963-1402/3
Karen Hall Vocational High (St. Mary)
St. Hilda's High (Brown's Town, St. Ann)
Westwood High (Stewart Town, Trelawny) 876-612-0052

Of those, I recognize Hampton, Westwood & Munroe as probably the more established.

The names of 2 of the boarding schools are incorrectly quoted, i.e., Karen Hall should be Carron Hall, and Munroe should be Munro (no "e").

Jamaica education FAR better than Canada
by: Anonymous

I'm surprised someone actually intimated that Jamaican schools are not up to par. Let me tell you this, I live in Canada, I tutor in Canada and the caliber of the students is alarming. For example I have a grade three child who don't know how to spell step, he doesn't know letter sounds, I have a 5 year old who don't know the difference between S and R and can't spell her five-letter name. My son is 4 years old and I not only give him grade one math, but he knows how to break down a word by the various syllables and spell the word correctly. I am definitely taking him home for his education. Not only that, unless your child is going to be enlisted in a private school in Canada, the chances of that child obtaining something of worth is Slim to none and the cost of private school here is so expensive. What you pay per month here is even more than what you pay per term in Jamaica. AND our system is BETTER. As a mother and trained teacher, in BOTH countries, I should be able to tell the difference.

Canadian vs Jamaican Schools
by: Nicole

@Anonymous dated September 2016.

I went to St. Hilda"s Diocesan High and it was a wonderful experience. St. Hildas remains a top rated high school.

My children were partially schooled in Jamaica - we now live in Canada and let me tell you, the Jamaican education they received - Ardenne Prep and High respectively is faaar superior to the education here in Canada. While the Canadian High School offers more options...My child Soars above his peers here. I will say thanks to the strength of the education he received back home.

Jamaican Boarding School education is wonderful and enriching experience
by: Anonymous

Dear Anonymous:

Were you trained or educated at one of Jamaica's premier boarding schools you would realize that, in Jamaica we receive students from all over the world.

My brother and I attended boarding school in Jamaica and found among our classmates, many of the world leaders off springs. Hailing from places such as Qatar, Germany, Spain, India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, to name a few.

Even today, many years later, my boarding school friends who are now lawyers, doctors, businessmen, etc are among my closest friends. I travel often and have been given the red carpet treatment due to these relationships built many years ago.

What makes boarding school education totally different from regular day school education is that, at boarding school you are totally dependent on each other for everything- no mommy or daddy to watch over you. You learn independence and interdependence to the point you know your friends and they know you much like brothers and comrade in arms.

If I had a son ready to attend boarding school, I would send him to Munro College or Knox College. If I had a daughter, she would attend St. Hilda or Hampton.

The camraderie, friendships and networks built through the Jamaican Boarding schooling last a lifetime and I am a living proof and witness to it. As one who has served in military the closest comparison is the military.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Boarding School
by: Anonymous

If you live in Canada, Please do not send your child to boarding school in Jamaica. Jamaicans are sending their children out of the country for an education. In Canada, you have choice of schools and a better educational system. Jamaican schools teach you how to pass exams, Canadian schools give you an education.

Theraputic Setting:
by: Anonymous

I have a property that I am trying to get rented in St. Ann. A school is on the property at this time and will be relocated soon. It would be the perfect place for a theraputic setting. Thanks you for the insight to help troubled teens and for being a foster parent for so many years.

KNOX COLLEGE
by: C A JOHNSON

I am suggesting Knox College for many reasons: it is the only co-ed boarding school in Jamaica.

I believe in the boys and girls mix in school. Secondly, emphasis is placed on leadership there and students are being introduced to: chemistry, biology and physic at the 8th grade.

In most of the high schools student are taught the subject when they reach the 9th and 10th grade and finally, Knox College remains in the to 10 ranking of high school in Jamaica.

They have a good mathematics department. My son went there.

Hampton School and Munro
by: Anonymous

Munro College and Hampton are best boarding school for boys and girls respectively, and speaking from experience trust me.

I went to Hampton and I'm sure of what I am saying. If there was a lack supervision and other things these schools would not have being running for over 155 years.

Munro College along with the Hampton School are operated by the Munro and Dickinson Trust and has a very advanced curriculum like other schools in country but more DEVELOPED.

I would recommend Munro College for boys and the Hampton School for girls to ANYONE who want sent their child or children to A BOARDING SCHOOL OR BOARDING SCHOOLS in Jamaica.

Knox College
by: James

Knox College and Munro are very good boarding schools. I would go with Knox College though since it is a co-ed boarding school.

If you look at the statistics, Knox College boarding fee is $70,000 and there academics are good also.

They are in the top 10 high schools in JM. #MYOPINION

Munro College and Hampton School
by: Anonymous

Munro College is best boarding school for boys in the Caribbean and Latin America.

If there was a lack supervision it wouldn't be an operating BOARDING SCHOOL for 158 years. In fact it is the only remaining BOARDING SCHOOL for boys in Jamaica.

Munro College along with the Hampton School are operated by the Munro and Dickinson Trust and has British based curriculum for teaching in both schools; unlike other schools in country.

I would recommend Munro College for boys and the Hampton School for girls to ANYONE who want sent their child or children to BOARDING SCHOOOL in Jamaica.

Alternative for Troubled Teens
by: Anonymous

I have been a therapeutic foster parent in Canada for over 20 years and now live in Jamacia.

I am interested in starting a small retreat in a beautiful remote area to work with teen girls who are starting down the "wrong path" and parents are looking for an alternative to a treatment center.

The program would be 12 - 16 weeks in length and would include individual tutoring, building self esteem, yoga, horsemanship, counseling, life skills and volunteer work.

Only 12 girls will be accepted into the program at one time...looking for feedback and whether there is interest in this type of program alternative.

Knox College in the hills of Clarendon, is a well established boarding school. it is also a great school when it comes to academics. I know this because my eldest son use to attend there. Many successful pupils including my son, emerge from Knox College to become productive members of society.
