How much for a ton of steel in Jamaica?
In fact, I vividly recall the jitters here in March 2018 when there was a move by the Trump Administration in the US to impose tariffs on steel prices.
The prices have fluctuated much since, and so the now question is...
How much for a ton of steel in Jamaica?
RESPONSE: by Wellesley, January 8, 2020
At the time of writing, the average cost for a ton of steel in Jamaica today is $107,984.85 Jamaican dollars.
That's converted to approximately $830.65 USD at today's exchange rate.
Methodology
How did I arrive at that?
I reached out to twenty (20) of Jamaica's most popular hardware stores, at least one from each parish, and asked for a quote on a ton of 1/2 inch steel.
1/2 inch steel, by the way, is the most popular steel used here in the construction process.
And yes, I requested and received the final price (with taxes included).

Did you notice that the hardware stores in Kingston, our capital city, recorded both the highest and lowest prices?
Yup! From my little research, Super Value Home Center on Old Hope Road, appears to be most costly supplier for 1/2 inch steel at $125,236 JMD per tonne, while Phil's Hardware, located on Constant Spring Road, the cheapest in the island at $98,151 JMD per tonne.
