QUESTION:
Hello I want to know when the marriage takes place in Jamaica, is it legal in the United States?
ANSWER: by Wellesley Gayle
Hi Jo-Ann,
Thanks for asking.
The short answer is yes! The Jamaica marriage license is in fact recognized throughout the world as
a legal marriage license.
The United States and all states within have Reciprocal Agreements enacted through law by
which nations and the various states all respect marriages sanctioned by another.
Basically as long as an American marriage is recognized by the government of Jamaica, then a Jamaican marriage would be recognized in the U.S. and thereby must be recognized by all states within the U.S.
No other action is necessary other than the wife informing the necessary agencies, (SSA, state
DMV, voter registration, etc.) if she intends to use her husband's surname.
The USCIS website can provide you further details.
