Why is it called Jamaica Ginger Cake?

So I guess now you are wondering how is it called Jamaican ginger cake when most Jamaicans have never heard of it? Well just as Jamaican culture and practices draw from the many cultures of the people who were here before, the Jamaican culture and practices have definitely influenced other places in the world.

So you see, the Jamaican ginger cake is not truly Jamaican. Rather it is a cake that is quite popular in Britain. The name was derived from, the actual Jamaican ginger!

You see back in the days, Jamaica was one of the first countries to start producing ginger for the British. They would export a significant amount of ginger to both Britain and Europe and over time the ginger got very popular in the countries. At first, ginger was only used for its medicinal purposes such as its use to treat stomach pain and gastroenteritis.

Eventually, the flavours were discovered as well. So besides the ginger, Jamaica also exported its spices and dark brown sugar. Over the years, there have been different names given to the same cake such as Jamaican Sticky Ginger Cake, Dark Jamaican Gingerbread and Jamaican Ginger Loaf.

The main flavours of the Jamaican ginger cake are ginger, molasses, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Jamaican Ginger Cake Recipe

This Jamaican ginger cake recipe will serve around 12 people and will take you about 2 hours from start to finish. You will need a saucepan, a loaf/rectangular baking tin and a mixing bowl.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 eggs
  • Half cup golden syrup
  • 2 tablespoon milk
  • 4 oz butter
  • Half cup molasses
  • Half cup dark brown cane sugar
  • Half cup water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • ยฝ tsp nutmeg- grated
  • 2 tbsp ginger powder
  • 2 oz ginger root- chopped finely
  • 1 tsp baking soda

PROCEDURE

  1. As always, preheat your oven first. In a loaf/rectangular baking tin add some greased parchment paper.

  2. In a mixing bowl add your sifted all-purpose flour, nutmeg, ground ginger and cinnamon powder. Lightly whisk to get an even mix.

  3. Add water, brown cane sugar, ginger root, golden syrup, molasses, and butter to a small saucepan. Set on low heat and gently stir until the butter has melted fully, then remove from heat.

  4. Once the mixture has cooled down, add it to your mixing bowl of dry ingredients and mix well until a smooth batter is smooth.

  5. Add the eggs to the batter and continue mixing until fully combined and smooth.

  6. In a separate bowl, add baking soda and the milk and mix together. Once that is done add the mixture to the mixing bowl with the other ingredients and mix well.

  7. To your already lined baking tin, add the batter.

  8. This cake will take about an hour and a half to bake. Test with a toothpick for readiness.

  9. Remove the cake from the oven and while still hot, use any remaining syrup you had made earlier to glaze the cake.

  10.  Let the cake sit for an hour before removing it from the tin.

So while the Jamaican Ginger Cake is not traditionally Jamaican, it is inspired by flavours that are loved by Jamaicans. Give it a try.
